Reply:Purple with a little prussian blue and keep the color thin and transparant.

Reply:I'm an oil painter, but I KNOW that Alizarin crimson and Ultramarine blue make a GREAT violet with oils anyway. Can it be much different with watercolor?
Reply:Try a watery mix of ultramarine blue and alizerin crimson - the more water the paler the colour. But remember that watercolour dries lighter so it is always best to do a test piece and let it dry to see if it is the right shade. If not you can add more water to lighten or more colour to darken. Also remember in watercolour you start light and go to dark - so you can also paint a shade darker once dry.

Ultramarine blue is a nice transparent color that dries somewhat grainy (it's a nice texture), and Grumbacher has a nice purplish color - thio violet. You might check out the art materials website, Jerry's Artarama for images of the various watercolor paint colors to get a good idea of the existing colors from different manufacturers. Different paint pigments have differing properties - some are transparent, like ultramarine blue, and some are more opaque appearing, like yellow ochre. The best rule of thumb is to get some likely appearing colors, and on a test piece of watercolor paper, try some samples - try mixing the two or more colors together and apply, or try laying down one color, and then applying a second color once the first color has completely dried are just two ways to see what effect you might prefer.

You might also be interested in the wonderful online artist community, wetcanvas. Basic membership is completely free, and there are currently more than 110,000 worldwide members. There are many different channels for different art media, and watercolor is just one of them.

Hope this helps and gives you some ideas. Have fun using watercolor - it is a very nice medium, and it works well with mixed media, like pen and ink, and pastels.
