Where Can I Buy Edible Lavender?

I don't mean made out of iceing I mean the real flower.

Where Can I Buy Edible Lavender?
There are several varieties of lavender, and all of them are edible. English lavender is considered the best for teas and French for flavorings, although any lavender will work.

Most garden centers carry lavender. Check out on-line garden centers like Springhill, or Gurneys, as these catalog-based firms will frequently carry different varieties, and they are considerably less expensive than your local garden center.

If you are not in a position to plant or grow lavender, I would suggest you check your local apothecary store/alternative health/herbalist store, as they will more than likely have sprigs or sachets of untainted, organic edible lavender.

I do not recommend getting lavender from a commercially-sold lavender sachet or potpourri, as the aromas are frequently artificially enhanced, and can be aroma, flavor, or otherwise contaminated by other ingredients.

Here are two internet outfit that sells lavender in bulk at reasonable prices, and I am sure there are others if you do a quick Google search.

Reply:Bergamot is an essential oil from the fruit of a citrus tree, Citrus aurantium bergamia. I suppose you could plant one if you could find the seeds, or if you could get a seedling. As to why it smells like lavender to you - odors are subjective, just as colors or tastes are.
Reply:Origin of bergamot oil

This tree is native to South East Asia, but was introduced to Europe, and particularly Italy and is also found in the Ivory Coast, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.

Bergamot oil is made from a tree that can grow up to four meters high, with star-shaped flowers and smooth leaves, bearing citrus fruit resembling a cross between an orange and a grapefruit, but in a pear-shape. The fruit ripens from green to yellow.

The oil is one of the most widely used in the perfumery and toiletry industry and forms, together with neroli and lavender, the main ingredient for the classical 4711 Eau-de-cologne fragrance. It is used to flavor Earl Grey tea.

The name is derived from the city Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy, where the oil was first sold.

I love the smell of Bergamot and use Sarah Jessica Parker's perfume called "Lovely" because it has a lot of Bergamot oil in it.

How much should I charge for a nicely packaged 175g Lavender Bath Milk?

If you are selling at a retail store I would charge as much as I think the customers would pay.

If you are wholesaling to companies they need to be able to price the products at competitive rates and make at least 35%.

You also need to consider your overhead and the quanitity you would sale.

I found these retail prices.

What type of Lavender has small white flowers and releases it scent at night and smells nothing like Lavender?

Its not a lavender dear.

All lavender are bee pollenated so as bee's are not out at night, whatever it is you are referring to is not from the lavender family.

Has anyone ever grown lavender before?

i really don't know what i'm doing i just picked it up a the store cuz it smelled nice.i need to know a little more than water it i already knew thati need like some other info on .the subject.

Has anyone ever grown lavender before?
I think this is one of those plants everyone enjoys. The plant has a long history of cultivation. Lavender is a family of some 25- 30 plants native to the Mediterranean, growing in dry, rocky habitats. These plants will not survive damp winter rains without excellent drainage or summer humidity without good air circulation and lots of sun. It can be done, after all England is famous for their lavender. It just needs warmth and shelter from harsh, wet winters. It is dampness, more than cold, that kills lavender plants. In summer humidity be sure the have lots of room for air to circulate as they can get a fungal disease and rot without air.

Considered an herb, it is a semi-woody, semi-evergreen perennial, growing in an upright mounding clump. Like many plants grown for their essential oils, a lean soil, lacking organics, will encourage a higher concentration of oils. An Higher pH and especially a chalky soil, one over a lime stone bed rock, will enhance the lavenders fragrance.

It takes about three years for Lavender to reach full size. Plants should be pruned every year immediately after bloom to keep a compact shape and encourage repeat flowering. Shear the stems after they the buds have opened unless you wish to use then for pot pouri. Then cut them after only the first couple of buds on the stem have opened. They are grey until the buds open. Once you see color they can be cut. If you wait til all the buds have opened you lose a lot of their scent and the buds will fall of the calyx more readily. The plant will bloom for about 4-5 weeks.

Cooking with lavender is common in Europe and the Mediterranean. In France it is used in Herb Provence. It is a member of the mint family and is close to rosemary, sage, and thyme. It is best used with fennel, oregano, rosemary, thyme, sage, and savory.

Lavandula angustifolia, known as English or True lavender is used as as bath freshener. Lavandula translates as "to wash" so float some in the bath water or fold a sprig in with your linens.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavandula_a...
Reply:Plant it in a location where it gets partial to full sun and moist soil. You can pick and dry the flower for later use in potpourri or soaps or oils.
Reply:Although lavender plants get regularly pruned simply by harvesting the flowers, to keep them well shaped and to encourage new growth, a bit of spring pruning is in order. The taller varieties can be cut back by approximately one-third their height. Lower growing varieties can either be pruned back by a couple of inches or cut down to new growth. If you live in an area where lavender suffers some winter die-back, don't even think about pruning your plants until you see some new green growth at the base of the plant. If you disturb the plants too soon in the season, they give up trying.

Containers

You can always grow your lavender in pots and move it to follow the sun or even bring it indoors for the winter. Keep in mind that although lavender has a large, spreading root system, it prefers growing in a tight spot. A pot that can accommodate the rootball with a couple of inches to spare would be a good choice. Too large a pot will only encourage excessive dampness.

Insure that the pot has plenty of drainage. To prevent water pooling in the pot, place about an inch of loose gravel at the bottom. Rot root is one of the few problems experienced by lavender plants. Use a loose, soilless mix for planting and remember that container grown lavender will require more water than garden grown plants. How much more depends on the environment and the type of pot. Water when the soil, not the plant, appears dry and water at the base of the plant to limit dampness on the foliage. Compact varieties make the best choices for containers. Some to try are L. angustifolia ‘Nana Alba’ and Spanish lavender
Reply:plant in well drained sandy soil, make sure if the roots are wound around from being put in pot separate the roots a little in middle on bottom. mulch with leaves or grass for winter, comes back every year wider and fuller. love it!
Reply:Advice from Alina is very comprehensive isnt it? Really, all you need is well drained soil and sunny position. and talk to the plant!!!
Reply:Growing Requirements

As with most plants, your success in growing this coveted plant will depend both on what kind of growing conditions you can provide and which varieties you select to grow. Lavender plants will tolerate many growing conditions, but it thrives in warm, well drained soil and full sun.

Read the rest of the article. I have 2 lavender plants and I cut the brown/gray dead leaves out when I see them. I also notice that the plant sucks water like its nobodys business. Get the plant use to a watering routine just like you have a routine of eating. Also as a child I did a test on what kinds of music plants respond to the best. My results were that plants grow better when they listen to Christian and Classical music.

When is the Best tiime to plant true lavender and Basil?

Is early Spring best or early summer?

When is the Best tiime to plant true lavender and Basil?
Basil should be planted after your last frost date. Check at: http://www.victoryseeds.com/frost/ to find the date for your location. Along with your sweet basil, you may want to try lime basil. It has a very unique flavor.

True lavender can be planted as soon as the weather warms up in the spring. It's a perennial. I will not flower the first year. If you want lavender this year, you need to buy the "lady" variety.
Reply:You can plant those now, depending on where you are. I'm in Texas and we're planting lavender and basil now. Hope that helps.
Reply:Basil really likes a warm soil and will totally die even after a mild frost. The basil leaves are just too delicate to withstand frost. Plant when the weather has gooten warm and will stay warm. You might think that it wont grow fast if you dont get it in but if you wait for the ideal weather, the basill will take off. Lavender can be planted in the spring as it does not flower until later in the growing season.
Reply:we started ours indoors in February. Just be sure it get's plenty of sun

Does black closed toe shoes work with a lavender prom dress?

In order to conserve money I decided to wear a pair a shoes I already owned to my junior prom. The shoes I'm thinking about wearing with my lavender dress are black and closed toe with a sort of strap thing behind your heel. I was just wondering if this would look well together because I don't wanna look like crap, it would ruin the night for me if I did.

Does black closed toe shoes work with a lavender prom dress?
I didn't know any girls that went to prom that didn't take their shoes off, but if you feel you must be entirely fashionable, I think that a lighter colored shoe would look best. However, the black might go well if you add some sort of embellishments to attract some positive attention. Maybe some lavendar colored rhinestones over the band, or an elegant anklet that goes well with your dress. Accessories always seem to help when things just don't "feel" right together.

Irregardless of how your shoes look, you should feel special and beautiful on such an occasion, so work with what you have and be creative! In the end, only how YOU think of yourself is what will matter, so don't worry if you think others will disagree with the black shoes. ;)
Reply:Just to let you know my prom was last night and I had the best time. You were right it's all about confidence and feeling good about yourself. So again thanks alot for your help Report It

Reply:Glad to hear that it turned out well! Keep that confidence and self-assurance, and most of all a good self-image and you will be unstoppable! ;) Report It

Reply:no! dont wear those shoes. go with white, not black
Reply:hun i'm sure just with about $40 you can get some gorgeous heels in gold to match with your lavender dress. gold + lavender = perfection. i wouldn't wear black heels with lavender dress especially it's closed toe.
Reply:oh sorry honey but ... black shoes with any light colored dress just DONT match

id suggest if your short on money... go to macy's ... they ALWAYs have a sale rack... try to get a white strappy shoe... or get a lavendar...or a cream... pleaseee dont wear a black CLOSED toe shoe

or try payless

or if its your junior prom... how bout invest in a shoe..i think that even 50$ shoes are expensive... but at macy's if your willing to spend 20..they have a sale rack for 20 dollar shoes... and theyre cute

just try those two stores... youd be suprised what you can find

or you can always work ... wash cars...mow lawns... walk dogs... to earn a few bucks and buy cute shoes

hope you have a good prom..be beautiful... (dont wear those shoes silly)!!!
Reply:this will be okay, as long as you wear black or silver accessories. you could also try some thrift stores, they are really happening!
Reply:one year I spray painted an old pair of black shoes silver for homecoming. It cost like, $4. Granted the paint only lasted the one night before it started to peel, but thats all you need them for anyway! And like the others said, no one looks at your feet anyway
Reply:Lavender gowns look better with beige or white pair of stiletto heels. But if you really have no choice, then wear the black heels with confidence and take them off when dancing. Have fun!
Reply:um no that would look really bad. Light color dress + black shoes= yuck.
Reply:white or silver would look better (or if your doing gold jewelry, gold would be fine), but like the girl before me said... no one looks at your feet and girls usually take their shoes off anyways. but i'd recommend finding some lighter colored shoes for cheap, it is spring after all!
Reply:you wont look like crap...nobody looks at your feet on prom and when it comes to dancing most of the girl take off their shoes anyway.....however, you can find cheap cute strappy sandals at pay-less shoes or value city they would be a little more seasonal.
Reply:I am picturing it in my mind, and not likin it at all. One of the best nights of your life, the shoes must, muuuuuuuust, be perfect. Try, finding economical pair, cloth maybe and have them dyed. My sis said, possibly silver pair, or white is in this season. I think silver or dyed to match. HAVE A WONDERFUUUUUUUUUUUUL TIME, DEAR.
Reply:Darling! You must do either silver, gold (if jewelry is gold), or clear. Depending if you live in a metropolitan area or not, there are a couple of places you could look for shoes for one night. Such as Payless Shoesource, your local swapmeet, Off Broadway Shoe Outlet, Shoe Pavillion, Ross or TJ Maxx. Payless also has dyeable satins now in a variety of styles to choose from. I included the link, have a great prom! Muahx! P.S. The 2nd link is to the lucite wedge-- my absolute fav! Faaaabulous!
Reply:No, black is not spring-like, but screams winter-time. White is very hot this spring/summer, so go white or a silver strappy - especially with lavender. Have fun!

How can I create free publicity for my retail store "the lavender tangerine" Any suggestions ?

Hi!

If you are looking for some FREE publicity, I suggest sending out press releases to various media. Now you may wonder, how do I attract media? What will they find of interest in my shop?

Well, now the onus lies on you to come up with something creative, which does not cost you much. Think of some fun event which you can launch in your store. A competition for your customers for everyday of a month (You can even name that Month creatively and link it to your products / services). So everyday you have a few winners and they can all go into a lucky draw at the end of the month where they win a hamper worth $XXX. Now remember, a $100 worth gift hamper of items from your store may only cost you $25 in hard costs...

Ok... now you have your competition ready and the prize as well. So how does the media angle come in. Once you have thought out a funky and fun theme for that competition month, write out an interesting article loaded with benefits provided by your shop and interesting bits and pieces of information. Click a few quirky pictures of your self and customers and your staff having fun at your store and send it along with the press release to drive home the point of what a fun business you are.

Invite one of the reporters to participate on the opening day of the month long event... perhaps they could "inaugurate" the event! I all probability they will bring along a photographer as well. If not, keep you digi cam handy and click away and send the pictures out.

If they find your article and pictures interesting enough and in good taste... you have created some good FREE publicity for yourself by getting (perhaps) half a page of write up with a few snaps thrown in... :-)

Hope this helps. All the best!

Regards,

Namz

How can I create free publicity for my retail store "the lavender tangerine" Any suggestions ?
Create an online boutique, and advertise on affiliate websites.
Reply:Word of mouth is the "best" publicity that you can get!

Give great service, make sure you have what the customer needs, and go out of your way on the sales to please everyone... Word will get around that your open for business.

Putting posters up and billboards is expensive, and radio and TV time really cost a bundle, but, when its "bad times", then you advertise like crazy so that you "generate" the business...

Good customer service is the best thing there is, offer free coffee and other amnemities as a service to attract attention...(women "love" free coffee!).

Make an internet page! The better your page the more you may attract business from near and far...

I wish you well...

Where can I find concentrated Lavender to dilute and use as linen spray?

Where to get---can you do it at home??/

Where can I find concentrated Lavender to dilute and use as linen spray?
You can find it and other scents at craft stores. Just be sure you're buying a water based scent, not an oil based one or you might stain your clothes.
Reply:At a health food store.
Reply:musicimip's answer is really good...only one thing I thought of to add to it - the flea markets are also a good place to buy the essential oils. Look for the booths that sell incense, candles, scented rocks stuff like that. You might even find other scents that you want to try like mango or my favorite "clean cotton".
Reply:You can definitely do this at home. I would use purified or bottled (distilled) water so it doesn't get little floaties in it. And you want a clean spray bottle, cleaned up recycled one or new.

You may want to use a half and half mixture of water and alcohol for linen spray so it evaporates a little faster, so you don't get into a freshly misted...wet...bed. The alcohol smells at first use but doesn't stick around long...leaving the scent of choice behind.

Real essential oils, which is what you want...are not "oily" they are so concentrated that you need very little for a spray bottle of water. So they don't leave oily or pigment stains at all when used this way.

You get essential oils in health food stores, or in hippy dippy type places like candle shops, even headshops where pot smoking gear is sold. You can find a select few in regular places like Walmart, and some craft stores are carrying a few in the candle and soap making section. You can also buy them online various places, I have bought EO's at mothernature.com...they also have a reference area to tell you what the oils are good for and the scent family.

Lavender is such a common fragrance that it is very widely available. There are also slightly different smells of lavender EO's so sniff to make sure that is what you want. This would probably depend on slight variations in species and hybrids of these, how the plant grew, when it was harvested. It isn't really different plants, this would be similar to how a pepper is hotter if it grows in a hot dry climate or how a ripe tomato is sweeter than a green tomato.
Reply:i bought some at walmart about a year ago near the laundry section.
Reply:Try a pure oil, or an essentialoil. Alotof places sell room sprays

If i put a pot of soil under my lavender will the seeds grow to become more lavenders??

i bought this lavender and i wont to have more if i put a pot of soil under the flowers will they grow oh and the label says its a special kind breed to fit australian conditions does that mean it is a hybrid and it will not get seeds that are fertile??

If i put a pot of soil under my lavender will the seeds grow to become more lavenders??
It depends on what variety of lavender it is and you are right about the hybrid being infertile, but even if it does grow from seed, there's a good chance it won't be true to form, that is the same as the parent plant.

However there is a much easier and better way to obtain a plant that will be exactly the same as the parent plant and that is by tip cuttings, cut a new tip about 75mm long, strip off the lower leaves and dab into some rooting gel or honey and put into a fine potting mix or sand, keep moist and in about six weeks you will have a brand new plant. Make sure it doesn't have PBR (plant breeders rights) first, it will say on the label.

Cheers

Do you know the recipe for lavender lemonade?

I really need to know how to make lavender lemonade because I need it!!!!!!!!!!

Do you know the recipe for lavender lemonade?
INGREDIENTS

1 tray ice cubes

1/4 cup dried lavender

2 cups boiling water

3/4 cup white sugar

8 lemons

5 cups cold water, or as needed

DIRECTIONS

Place ice cubes into a 2 quart pitcher. Place the lavender into a bowl, and pour boiling water over it. Allow to steep for about 10 minutes, then strain out the lavender and discard. Mix the sugar into the hot lavender water, then pour into the pitcher with the ice.

Squeeze the juice from the lemons into the pitcher, getting as much juice as you can. Top off the pitcher with cold water, and stir. Taste, and adjust lemon juice or sugar if desired. Pour into tall glasses, pull up a lawn chair and a good book, and relax!
Reply:I dunno but that sounds SO classy and sophisticated,I gotta give ya that!(please excuse the country bumpkin talk after all I'm from the Midwest!)
Reply:I have NEVER heard of Lavender Lemonade, but it sounds absolutely delicious!

I'm going to give it a try. I'll use whatever you pick as the Best Answer (hopefully, it will be the first answer, I can taste that in my mind).

Companion plants to lavender?

what would be good to plant with the lavender? i have to move it cuz i didn't know at the time that lavender requires less water than my other plants

Companion plants to lavender?
Try Perovskia atriplicifolia, Santolina, Salvia Officionalis, anything with grey foliage usually likes less water.
Reply:grow a coloured leaf variaty of heather .it will give you all year round colour.
Reply:My lavender merges and grows huge and blooms more than it ever has since I planted it with sage. The two plants together are sensational and both very useful. Both are herbs and do not ned as much care and watering as other plants. Since I planted the laven der with the sage, it fully blooms twice a year. It is is full bloom now, in Northern Michigan
Reply:I would think that plants like lilies and iris' would be good since they don't require much to if any watering, but it depends on where you live as to how well these would grow.

How to cold-stratify lavender?

I'm trying, yet again, to start some lavender from seed. I've read various ways to cold-stratify the seeds before planting to aid germination. I'm curious what you've all had success with: soaking them in warm water overnight? Paper-towel baggie method in fridge? Freezer? And how long did you leave them in there? Thanks!

How to cold-stratify lavender?
I just let mine self-sow in the garden most of the time, but have found that I can start them from seed in the house. They can take up to a month to germinate, so be patient.

Although I haven’t found it to be worth the trouble, some gardeners recommend cold-stratifying lavender seeds to improve the germination rate. The simplest way to do this is to place lavender seeds into a ziplock bag of moistened seed starting mix and leave it in the refrigerator for 3 weeks. Then just plant them in little pots until they are large enough to plant outside.
Reply:You need to put the seeds in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks. I prefer a month. You do not want to freeze them. I haven't done lavender seeds. Do the directions on the package suggest soaking overnight? If not, don't. I tried that with Delphinium seeds. It didn't work. If it does say to soak overnight, you start out with warm water. It will cool off overnight. Don't worry. Just plant them the next day as per the directions.

Does anybody know if the plant called Mona Lavender, can stay outside all winter long and survive.?

I live up North, where it gets cold. Real cold.

Does anybody know if the plant called Mona Lavender, can stay outside all winter long and survive.?
One of the only downfalls of 'Mona Lavender' is that, like most Plectranthus, it doesn't tolerate very cold conditions, although it has been known to survive light frosts in Pretoria. If you live in an area prone to winter frosts then plant it in spring and it will flower in the autumn before the winter frosts take their toll.
Reply:since Mona Lavender is a plectranthus, related to the swedish ivy family, it is not hardy in zones below 8. It will barely take a light frost, and should be treated as a bedding plant or a house plant that can be taken in, in the winter.A web site, with gorgeous pictures:

Reply:if you lived in warmer conditions i would say yes but if it is very cold then no it could kill it... especially with the odd year with weather we've had this year... take it inside but just make sure that it is near a window

Reply:LAVENDER APPLE JELLY

6 lbs. apples

1 1/2 c. lavender flowers

3 c. sugar

Quarter apples (don't peel or core). Place in large kettle, add lavender. Boil then simmer until apples are tender. Pour into 3 thicknesses of cheesecloth over colander in bowl. Allow juice to drip overnight. Pour 3 cups of juice into large kettle, add sugar. Bring to a rapid boil until a drop on a cold spoon forms a hard film. Pour into sterilized jars and seal. Continue process until all juice is used.
Reply:Lavender Jelly

3 1/2 cups water

1/2 cup dried lavender flowers*

Juice of 1 lemon (approximately 1/4 cup)

1 (1 3/4-ounces) box powdered pectin or 1 pouch (3-ounces) liquid pectin

4 cups sugar

In a large saucepan over high heat bring water just to a boil. Remove from heat, stir in dried lavender flowers, and let steep for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, strain mixture into a deep kettle or pot, discarding the lavender flowers. Stir in lemon juice and pectin; continue stirring until the pectin is dissolved.

Over high heat, bring the mixture to a boil; add sugar. When the jelly solution returns to a hard rolling boil, let it boil for 2 to 4 minutes (see below), stirring occasionally.

Boil Times:

2 minutes - soft gel

4 minutes - medium gel

Testing for "jell" (thickness - I keep a metal tablespoon sitting in a glass of ice water, then take a half spoonful of the mix and let it cool to room temperature on the spoon. If it thickens up to the consistency I like, then I know the jelly is ready. If not, I mix in a little more pectin (about 1 teaspoon to 1/2 of another package) and bring it to a boil again for 1 minute

After boiling, transfer the jelly into hot sterilized jars. Fill them to within 1/4 inch of the top, wipe any spilled jam off the top, seat the lid and tighten the ring around them.

Makes five 1/2 pints.

I've recently been thinking about the name. And I know its not the most traditional but I personally dont see it as an odd name at all.

It's different. Best of luck to you.

Lavender. Lavy for short.
Reply:I think it is a pretty name. Reminds me of Lavender Brown from the Harry Potter series. It is the only time I have ever heard the name!
Reply:If you like it that is all that matters. It is not such a weird name that a child would get teased.
Reply:I think it would be shortened to Lav which is also short for lavetory (which is a toilet).

Not so bad as a whole name but the shortened version would sure put me off! I would hate for her to be teased about being a loo!
Reply:Another HP fan!!

I think the name Lavender is just fine! No different from naming a girl Rose or Iris. All are pretty names and suitable for girls! BTW, the gal I knew named Lavender (she is 90 something) went with Val as a nickname while in junior high school and switched back to Lavender after high school. She was the youngest of my late grandmother's close friends.

What to do with lavender?

I have a bunch of fresh lavender growing in the backyard, what are some things I can do with it?

What to do with lavender?
Internal use: Tea: 1 to 2 tsp whole herb per cup of water. Allow to steep for 3-5 minutes or even up to 15 minutes. Soothes tension and helps insomnia.

External use: inhalation: dried flowers in 2 to 3 cups of boiling water; inhale vapors for headache, depression, or insomnia.

Topical application: lavender water can be safely applied. Pour 3/4 cups boiling water over 3 Tablespoons dried lavender flowers or buds. Let cool and strain. Can be sprinkled on your pillow for a good night's sleep, or applied to skin to cool, soothe and refresh.

Lavender Bath and Oatmeal: place into a muslin bag or multiple thicknesses of cheesecloth, two tablespoons each of lavender buds or flowers, and freshly ground oatmeal (whirl in blender). Tie tightly with a long piece of string or ribbon. Attach the bag to the bathtup spigot, so the bag hangs below the water level. While bathing, rub the bag on the skin to soothe dry, itchy, achy spots. Very relaxing!
Reply:You can put it into a little mesh bag and put it in your linen closet to freshen up towels, or tie it tightly together and display it in a basket in your bathroom, bedroom, etc.

Lavender also promotes sleep, good to keep by the bed! If you sew, you can put dried lavender into a small pillow and keep under your pillow to promote sleep.
Reply:Dry it and sew small pillow cases to put it in. Sleep on it or keep it in your room. It is calming.
Reply:sachets, dried arrangements, potpourri, and even some recipes contain lavender.....you could also (if you're ambitious) try to press it for the oil and make your own essential oils.

Does Rosemary and Lavender last through the winter? Can they grow outside through the winter?

I live in zone 7, and both are perennials that make it through snow and freezing temps. I have two types of rosemary-officianalis and prostratis-they both make it.

Does Rosemary and Lavender last through the winter? Can they grow outside through the winter?
There are 2 types of Rosemary. One is winter-hardy to -10 degrees F. The other type will die at first frost. Check the link below for a winter-hardy type.

Lavender also survives to 0 degrees F and is deer-resistant (if you have that problem).
Reply:Depends on where you live. At the building where I work here in San Diego, they trim the lavender plants down to about 1-foot stalks in December or January. And, they come back with a vengeance in spring. I also have a friend who has rosemary bushes all over his property. He doesn't do anything to them and they grow year-round.

Bought a plant called a cotton lavender today. It was in the herb section and does not smell like lavender.?
Cotton Lavender

Santolina chamaecyparissus

Sometimes known as Grey Lavender, Lavender Cotton or Grey Santolina.

This aromatic plant has been grown in English Gardens since the Sixteenth century, where it was often used as a space filler in knot gardens or to edge paths and walks.

Nicholas Culpepper writing in 1649 assures us that it could be used as an antidote for all sorts of poisonous bites.

However its main use was to deter moths from munching their way through clothing - especially woollen clothing. It was mixed with English Lavender or Rosemary and put into muslin bags and hung amongst clothes – and is still used for this purpose today.

Despite its name it is not related at all to English Lavender and is a member of the daisy family.

It is a hardy perennial shrub (to zone 7) growing to 32 inches or 80 cm and has lovely silvery grey green aromatic leaves.

In July and August it has small button-like flowers that unlike the leaves have a rather unpleasant smell.

Cultivation:

It prefers a light well drained soil in a sunny position and is very good at tolerating drought.

It can be clipped in late spring or early summer but never in autumn and propagated from cutting in late July.

Uses.

Cotton Lavender is a good companion plants for roses and can be used as ground cover if spaced 24 inches or 60 cm apart.

It looks good as edging to paths and borders and will keep its leaves in all but the hardest winters.

Using Lavender oil to calm the baby?

I need to know about the usage of lavender oil on babies. How do you use it?Do you add it to the bath tub to give baby a calm bath and thereafter to put the baby to sleep? If yes at what age(week) of the baby do you start using it as the baby's skin is quite sensitive.I've heard some people using lavender scented candles. Can we use such scented candles in baby's room? Please put in ur suggestions and also opinions about this.Especially considering the age/week of the baby.

Thanks in advance :-)

Using Lavender oil to calm the baby?
the younger the infant, the more water to use to dillute it...but j %26amp; J does make a line of lavender baby products...they are grrreat, but nothing beats the real thing...

I would definitely make sure u are using a quality candle made of natural/organic products...and make sure the child's room is ventilated...but there's no real harm behind using the essential oil, just b sure to dillute for baby's sensitive skin,,,

my grandmother used natural remedies on us, since birth, lavender to relax, eucalyptus when we were sick, oatmeal for itchy skin, and the list goes on..

hope this helps, enjoy parenting!?!
Reply:Any of those methods will work. You can also place little sachets around the house and in babys room.
Reply:ask a dr before using essential oils.
Reply:All of the ways you put are great. I give mine little baby massages after their baths. Lavendar is soo relaxing. As for what age to stop, I put lavendar oil in my five year old's water when he bathes and lotion him down ( I think JandJ makes the oil and lotion and body wash ) and he's asleep in no time. Have you smelled it?? OMG, lol it would put me to sleep!!

Do light yellow and lavender go well together?

Im talking about a light yellow collared shirt with a lavender cami underneath, im just not quite sure how it would look

any opinions?

Do light yellow and lavender go well together?
sure..it look ok...but try it on though
Reply:Perhaps, it would have that Lilly Pulitzer look
Reply:I really think not. I wouldn't buy it (if that's why you're asking), you might buy it and then never wear it. My mom always gets mad at me for that.
Reply:sounds cute!
Reply:it looks old lady, or like old fashioned b/c it reminds me of taffy
Reply:I would think it would look nice together. Leave the collar open to mid-breast to make sure the cami shows and wear a thin gold chain around your neck. The gold will accentuate the pastels and add a little sparkle to the outfit. You're going to look great!
Reply:Its hard to picture try it on and if you like it, then thats all that should matter, if the yellow is faint it will probably look fine....
Reply:heeeyy!! anyways, in my art class liek last year, we learned about complimentary(spelling??) colors. Lavender and yellow were right across from each other in the circle of colors. Thus, my teacher told me that they match. Matching colors: Blue and orange. if you were to say about clothes, it depends on your personal appearance. so, you may try it on in the fitting rooms at the malls or any stores and see if you liek it because everyone has their own personal style. ♥
Reply:It really depends on the fabrics and cuts of the shirt %26amp; cami, but Yes! It's a very spring time look.
Reply:Yes

With socks to tie them together.
Reply:absolutely.. they are two of my fave colors! so springy... try it on first just to be sure...
Reply:i think it would look fine, both are pastels. try to play both the colors up with some funky jewelry
Reply:only around spring! It is very eastery
Reply:If you want to go for a mature look sure...subtle colors like those are great to wear during the spring time=)
Reply:it matters really what the shirt on top looks like

but try it on and see how it looks! they are both spring time colors, so i'm sure they would look together.

and camies are good with everything!

Now would probably be a good time to check back at Wal Mart or another super center and see if you can find them. The container should be labeled with the name. If not buy one and take it to your florist. They will know the name or at least be able to find something very similar.
Reply:You also might want to check to see if in fact that they are white with natural purple or did they add purple color? :Last Christmas Wal-Mart was selling poinsettias that were all sorts of colors, and it was discovered that they were painting them!

I painted my room lavender purple, what color should my bedding be?
white and pastels would look good as well a rich choclate brown color on accessories.
Reply:apple green or yellow
Reply:black would look nice i think
Reply:Red.
Reply:silver grey
Reply:Almost anything pastel like would go with lavender. Pastel blues, pinks, yellows, white.
Reply:Purple goes really well with a light leaf green and cream colors. Maybe cream/tan colored bedding with hints of purple and green. Use the the light leaf green to accent the purple, but not be a main color of the room. Or, you could go with a different shade of that same purple. When looking at the paint card, you can use colors that are two steps away from the color that you used (lighter or darker).
Reply:I would go with all white bedding and curtains. Your pillows can be different colors like a yellow or green.
Reply:Oatmeal or taupe and use darker purple throw blankets and pillows.
Reply:I like Red (the correct tone), and lime green. A honey colored wood really accents this, I always prefer a cherry tone.

How do i make lavender scented candles?

ya. homemade, not to strong.

please give ingreidients, and step-by-step directions please.

i have a lot of different tools and stuff at my disposal. so ya.

How do i make lavender scented candles?
I have made them by getting supplies at a craft store- usually Hobby Lobby. They sell candle wax and also lavender scents, etc for candlemaking. You can make them with old jars which is easiest. Use a double boiler (or a pan of water or electric skillet and another pan for the wax) then as it's melting add fragrance and pour into your holder. you'll need the wick and metal for the bottom (also found in candlemaking area) and use a pencil or something to wrap the wick around while it's hardening (wax). It might take several hours or overnight. HOpe this helps- there are many books out there to search through for ideas also.
Reply:This site will give you the step by step instructions for making several kinds of candles. As for your lavender, have you thought of making sachets out of what you have? I think they would make lovely gifts. Better Homes and Garden's web site has instructions on how to make the sachets.

http://www.candletech.com/basicinstructi...
Reply:buy 3 packs of cheap candles . (white ones) break 'em into pieces (Small pieces so that they melt more easily) you can use a potato peeler choose your mold . example: the bottom of a milk / orange juice box.

grab a stove, place a pan with boiling water in it. then, put inside the pan a smaller pot ( without boiling water) inside the small pot, place your candle pieces. add "fragance" (that's its name) that smells to lavender. you can buy this where they sell inciense. if you want to add color (necessary) add a couple of drops of oil paint. (purple)

add your hot wax into the mold, with its "mecha" ( string in which you put fire) propperly attached to the bottom of your mold..........and wait until it cools off. peel off the mold and.......................ta da!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:mix the dried lavendar into wax as you melt it, pour candle into mold with the wick in it, wait till it cools, keep filling the depression that happens when it cools till there is no more depression. enjoy.
Reply:Well you need to melt your candle wax first in a double boiler then when the wax is ready to melt you add lavender essential oil in the amount depends on how strong you want it, just go by the scent of your nose you need to make your wick while the wax is heating by useing a metal round holder make the wick 2 inches longer than your glass candle container and tie it on a pencil or something that will go across the top making sure the wick is in center you do your first pour and wait about 8 hours for it to toatlly harden and melt somemore wax and put more essintial oil in it and pour again and repeat the process untill the candle is smooth and doesn't have a "pothole" in the middle of it.

Lavender wall colour for bedroom? What colour furniture?

I want to paint my new bedroom in lavender colour, what colour of furniture and decoration would match. Any ideas or pictures? Thank you

Lavender wall colour for bedroom? What colour furniture?
Hi Aish,

If you are going for lavender walls, then you need to decide whether you want 1)light, airy , sophisticated interiors or 2) a girly interior flushed with purples.

If you are going for 1), then you can never go wrong with whites, blacks and greys in your room! white cupboards if possible, grey/silver cot with pink/puple/blue bedcover and light blue/grey cushions and pillows would be great. go for curtains that match. and remember to add lots of whites and blacks in your room!

However, if you decide against white, you can always go for tan colored furniture and tan colored study table.

If you want to go for the girly look, you can have deep purple bedcovers with light purple cushions, a carpet with shades of pinks, purples, blues, girly multi colored curtains, etc!

basically, remember that lavender goes great with tan, black white, purples and light pinks and even pale blue.

ofcourse, remember that whatever you choose depends also on your floor color.

stick to your budget and good luck!
Reply:If u want to keep things simple, get light coloured(cream) wood furniture.

If u want to make it funky, u can get light yellow, light green or lime green coloured furniture.

u could also get ideas from the colour of the existing curtains and the carpet.
Reply:I did my stepdaughters room with lavender walls and white furniture. But I changed it up on one wall and painted a plaid using blue, green, yellow and purple different size stripes and lines. She loves it! Then with the bedding I went to the clearance section at linens and things and bought mix and match sheets and pillowcases in these colors, even found some cool acrylic knobs in these colors to change out the drab white ones on her dresser.
Reply:I think white would be a great color to go with lavender. It would be calming. You should also add some greenery. http://www.qualitysilks.com or http://www.newprocontainers.com
Reply:My daughters room is lavender and her furniture is white. It looks good together, but I think a dark cherry would look better.
Reply:Check out this website to see a gorgeous bedding ensemble to match a lavender/green bedroom:

this one is pretty too:

http://elegantlinenspc.com/European-Line...
Reply:I would think of a white or a beige color furniture to off set the lavender.
Reply:For

- a clean, resorty feel, go for White furniture

- white-framed watercolour prints of pastelly shades

- cosy contemporary, go for Dark Red or Dark Brown (eg. Walnut) furniture

- mahogany-framed blowups of pictures of brightly coloured subjects against dark background

- bright, fun and cheery, go for a Light Yellow (eg. Beech) furniture
Reply:I think white furniture, or a very light wood would look the best with lavender.
Reply:light brown accents or wood accents are beautiful

How do you care for a lavender plant?

Spanish lavender grows weed-like and needs little care. A bit of water from time to time and fertilzer occasionally, be careful tho' it can take over a small garden...but, then it does smell heavenly.

How do you care for a lavender plant?
Water it about every other day to keep it damp but not soaked.(If the soil around the plant sticks in crumbs to your finger, it is just damp enough). Lavender likes full sun and also occasional light fertilizing. If the plant is outside, cover it in winter to prevent winterkill.
Reply:yes..and all plant of course

What plants, (mostly herbs) from the choices below, would grow best indoors lavender and mint?
I grew mint indoors last year and it loved it and then i put it ouside and it just took over...

I would try a combo of mint, sage, basil and parsley, they seem to grow well together.

Lavender seems to grow well with, dill, thyme and rosemary. At least thats what has been the norm in my and my mothers gardens. Hope that kinda helps!
Reply:All can be started inside, but you want to eventually move them outside where they will get full sun. All herbs grow best in full sun, not a sunny window. You could keep them in a Three-Season room for a bit, but again, for better plant health and better growth and longevity, you will need to move them outside, even if they are in containers.
Reply:check on-line sources to see the amount of sunlight each needs. Some can thrive under florescent light. Some don't hold up well to direct sunlight, such as german chamomile. I grew some and it didn't fair well in the Arkansas heat of late spring/ early summer.

How do I prepare my backyard Lavender for cooking?

Here is a good link:)

How do I prepare my backyard Lavender for cooking?
Well, don't have backyard lavendar, but I do have a little herb garden right out the front window that includes lavender. All I do is cut a sprig, wash it, remove the needles throwing out the stem, and then chop up the needles as fine as I can get before adding them to the dish I'm cooking. Which so far has been using lavendar in spaghetti sauce. Stuffed in a chicken or thrown in with a roast I'd probably do like I do with thyme and rosemary, which is to just leave it on the stem.

Is it true that shampoos that have natural tea tree oil & lavender in them keeps head lice away?

If so,which brands are the best? I've heard that Giovanni is good, true?

Is it true that shampoos that have natural tea tree oil %26amp; lavender in them keeps head lice away?
HI there, Bloody Head Lice I hate them, I think the tea tree oil and lavender are very good but my daughters school have sent home a sheet on "Head Lice Prevention" and it is so easy, wash hair as usual then apply hair condition, comb through the hair with a nit comb and leave on for 20-30 minutes (I use a plastic shower cap to help with the drips) , the conditioner suffocates the little horrors. Repeat once a week. Since my daughter and I have done this head lice are a thing of the past and you can use any conditioner it doesn't have to be an expensive one ,I think it is much gentler than nit poisons and your hair feels so nice after a long condition.

What is the ratio to mix of lavender oil with 4oz jojoba oil.?

Also, does anyone know if Lavandula officinalis is the real deal or not. I bought it from GNC and is says 100% pure. What is a good oil mixture to do detoxes and how often / in what way should you use it....i.e on feet or in bath...so on?

Thank you in advance and may GOD bless you!

What is the ratio to mix of lavender oil with 4oz jojoba oil.?
Lavandula officinalis is INDEED the genus/species name of lavender. If the bottle says "Lavender Essential Oil" on it, by law, it is supposed to contain Pure Essential Oil of Lavender with NOTHING else in it, ie no carrier oils. With lavender oil, it is okay to use one or two drops directly on the skin. Lavender oil rubbed on the temples is a specific again migraines and other forms of headaches. Lavender essential oil if one of the VERY few that actually can be rubbed on the skin. This would be contraindicated with most other essential oils as they are just to strong for such an application, and really must be diluted with other carrier oils or lotions. Typically, to make lavender oil, or any other medicinal oil, like a massage oil, you will want to add 25-30 drops of essential oil per 8oz of whatever carrier oil you're using. You can use any oil essential oil on the body, with the possible exception of oil of wintergreen, which is a hepatotoxin and can be absorbed through the skin. Some oils you will simply need to be careful of because they are EXTREMELY strong, and more sensitive people may react to them, especially if used on their faces, so ALWAYS tell a client if you've used essential oils in your massage oil. Tell them which ones, and offer them a shower after their massage or instruct them to shower upon arriving home, especially if their face feels hot or tight. As far as detox is concerned, yes, essential oils will assist you with this process (usually), but as a massage therapist, I feel much more of this detox process is effected by the strokes you use, and the depth to which you massage. I use a custom-made blend with primarily rose, orange, ylang-ylang, vanilla, bergamot, neroli, and clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, a bit of lemon and other essential oils. The women in my practice adore this oil, as do many of the men. Any more q's? Email me.
Reply:The rule with oils is one part essential to ten parts carrier oil. I'm not sure about the oil from GNC, oils can be 100% pure synthetic oil, but they just leave that little part out. I use a brand called Garden Essence, they are garenteed pure and organic. I have never had any skin reactions with these like I have other brands. As for the mix to do detox I don't know of any right now sorry. I hope that helps and good luck!
Reply:generally you make a blend of 1 to 3 percent, thats all so 1 to 10 is incorrect. Jojoba carrier oil is thick so it will have something less than 600 drops to the ounce. if it is 500 drops to the ounce then a 1 percent solution would have 5 drops of lavender to the ounce of carrier, 10 drops would be a 2 percent blend and 15 drops would be a 3 percent blend. I use 10-15 drops per ounce of carrier and half that amount for a child. don't know about detoxing with essential oil and I never heard of using lavender for this. Also I don't care for GNC at all, never have. get your oil from camdengrey.com as I do.

Is it okay to plant purple sage near lavender?
Sage and Lavender are closley related (Lamiacea family) and are extremely compatible. Both enjoy a hot, sunny, well drained position in an acidic well mulched soil. Both like a heavy prune after flowering and will thrive will very little care.
Reply:almost all herbs can live in harmony. most dont need special food or fertilzer. i have some purple sage. just cut it back every spring and give it some water and sun, same as the rest.

you don't lose a year of eligibility if you transfer. Lavender came to Xavier after his sophomore season @ Oklahoma so he only had 2 years of eligibility remaining.

Go to Vermilion City, where misty is rhe gym leader, go east, cut the small tree blocking your way. Follow this untill you are at the cave. you can aslo get zapdos in this direction after getting surf. Just find the body of water buy the cave and surf untill you reach the power plant, at the end is zapdos.
Reply:havnt played 4 ages might be the tunnel near the power plant you will need flash i think?
Reply:The Tunnel should be east of Vermilion City (Routes 9 or 10)

What can I use lavender from my garden for, other than potpourri?

You can make lavender lemonade! make your lemonade the regular way (by hand or frozen in a can) and leave out the last portion of water. Boil water, measure out one can full, and place in a bowl with the lavender (you can put it in there loose, but it's a pain to scoop it out after, I would suggest putting it in a sachet bag ) and let the lavender steep in the hot water for 10-15 minutes, then add to the lemonade.

What can I use lavender from my garden for, other than potpourri?
You can make lavender ice cream, sorbet and frosting. You could make a wreath. Lavender sticks are interesting. Check out these links:

Reply:lavender can be used for tea, as flavorings in foods and salads. I have never grown lavender but plan to soon. I love the smell. Lavender is one of the sweetest, most alluring scents to me. I think that for a woman or man, to take some natural lavender for use as a "perfume" would be great. Rosemary too, and mint!
Reply:Antiseptic. It was used widely in the first world war.
Reply:Lavender tea is really good for baths, gives a natural parfum', and is light enough not to irritate allergies. You can either put it in the water, or melt glycerine soap, and re-form the soap with the lavender. Some people also make lavender applesauce. It is steamed with apples, light, flavorful.
Reply:Brush your pillowcases with fresh lavender. You'll never have a better night's sleep.

Does Lavender baby wash have side affects?

I heard from someone recently that a study was done with lavender baby body washes and it was determined that it causes femininity in male baby's. I personally find this to be ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. I would like to see some legit study's that prove or show, one way or the other so i can bring this information to the people in question. Or be completely stunned if it is true. Thank you.

Does Lavender baby wash have side affects?
That's the funniest thing I have ever heard!!!! I can just see some macho dad standing over mom while she's bathing their son and complaining that it's too flowery, "You're gonna make him into a damn girl!"
Reply:ive personally never heard of this. i would search the internet and find stories related to your question. some products do produce a common allergen. if your child doesn't have a bad reaction, for instance hivs, rash or etc. you should be fine.its suppose to very soothing.
Reply:Never heard of that, but it is a common allergen. As long as your child doesn't have a bad reaction to it, it is fine. It is supposed to be very soothing.
Reply:how stupid i used that soap on my son who is now four and he is 100% boy. there is no connection
Reply:I heard of one research that indicated that as well. It states that it can cause hormonal imbalance and breast growth. However, studies have also shown that in some adult males and young children, the hormones used in our meats have caused early puberty and some breast growth in men. Seriously. I think it's up to you to do the research and decide if you want to keep using lavender washes.

Reply:iv never heard of that and i find it quit funny that it would make a baby feminist. but i can say it does nothing to help my son sleep or keep him calm.
Reply:Never heard anything like that.
Reply:I use it in both my son %26amp; daughters baths I think that is just someone that doesn't like the smell of it.
Reply:I think the worst it's going to do is one of two things-

make him mellow and a bit sleepy, OR

make him sneeze.

How do i use lavender oil for my hair growth?

im not sure how to apply it to my hair.

How do i use lavender oil for my hair growth?
Well for one, don't apply it straight from the bottle. You have to use a carrier oil such as almond, olive, soy, coconut, etc. Just a few drops will do and mix well. Then you can probably apply on the scalp, leave it on for an hour and shampoo as normal. If your hair is naturally dry, you can leave it on your scalp.
Reply:don't use that on your head that is for relaxation...put that on the chakra's of your body and behind your ears..use pure jojoba oil and massage into scalp and hair when its dry...they sell it at the mall at gnc or natural food stores
