Is it possible to grow lavender in Puerto Rico?

I'm trying to start a container garden in my patio and I wanted to know if lavender would be possible to have with puertorican weather.

Is it possible to grow lavender in Puerto Rico?
Yes, you should be fine with lavender. There are many varieties, from Old English, French, Spanish etc. and all have slightly different growing requirements. Most are frost hardy too, though this shouldn't be a big issue for you. My favourites (differing scents):

Lavendula dentata - French Lavender - wonderful, 'butterfly' like petals on this type.

Lavendula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ - beautiful dark blue 18'' tall.

Lavendula stoechas - Spanish lavender, wonderful 'butterfly' like 'petals', similar to French lavender.

Raise your flower-bed used for planting, to allow water to run-away as well as mix with coarse gravel and some sand. Prune hard each year, in fall and again in early spring, to maintain bushy plants.

Good luck! Rob
Reply:The main enemy of lavender from seed is the winter. Until the lavender has a nice woody stem, it will die very easily in cold. But as you live in a nice warm area, this shouldn't be a problem. My grandfather lives in El Salvador and i have a HUGE lavender monster there. But, like they said, if the soil stays wet, it will die. An easy way to help with this is to mix some sand (beach sand is fine) into the soil where you plan to plant it (re gardless of if it's in the ground or not)
Reply:Yes. Lavender can grow in many climates all the way up to Canada and down to the equator outdoors.
Reply:of course u can! lavender hates wet feet so keep it well drained. also if starting from seed, it might not bloom the first year. it's better to get some thats already started then grow from there! "good drainage" is a must with this plant or it will die easily!
