Is lilac and lavender the same thing? and if they're not, whats tyhe difference?

i was reading the bottle of shampoo and it said scent of lilac and lavender

Is lilac and lavender the same thing? and if they're not, whats tyhe difference?
They are different species of plants. common Lavender (Lavandula_angustifolia) belong to mint family whilecommon lilac (Syringa vulgaris)belong to olive family. Lavender is pale purple while lilac is dark purple, they both used as fragrance.
Reply:They're two different scents from two different plants. To me, lilac has a sweeter scent than lavender; lavender has a slightly "sharp" scent to me. Lavender is an herb; lilac is a small (or sometimes BIG) shrub.
Reply:no, two different plants... lilac grows into a large tree/shrub... very distinct scent, strong, smells like spring..

lavender is a strong scent, but more subtle.. it grows on a flowering bush.. smaller plant... well established plants have tons of purple spike flowers..
Reply:Lilac is one kind of flower and Lavender is a different kind of flower. Although both are a purple color they both have different scents.

How can I get my Lavender plant to flower?

It said lime? will help, and I figure it's not the fruit. Ive been giving it regular houseplant food and the blooms that started (which should be purple) were dry and crumbly.

How can I get my Lavender plant to flower?
I have just planted my first bunch of lavender and I discovered by reading the below links that I now have to move it and buy some sand and make a mound.

I also discovered I don't know what kind mine is and that there is a whole lot of them........

Good Luck to you

http://www.gardening-tips-perennials.com...

And as there is no secret to the name of the plant, there are no secrets to the successful culture of this perennial herb. Full hot sun is the first ingredient in the recipe and this is a plant that thrives in the hottest part of my garden.

................Excellent drainage .................

is another ingredient in the recipe because any excessive wetness around the roots will lead to root rot. It is for this reason that growing lavenders on clay is not recommended. If you have clay soils, grow this plant in a container or in a raised bed with sandy soils in the raised bed.

The recipe is complete with a shovel of compost spread around the plant in early spring and yearly spring pruning to remove all the winter-killed branches.

..................Over feeding ....................

leads to soft growth and poor fragrance; you have to be tough on this plant and serious growers will eliminate even the single shovel of compost.

Spring pruning encourages thicker growth and more flower production so do trim the plant in the early spring just when the buds start to swell on the stems.

................Blooming ............................

http://www.gardenguides.com/how-to/tipst...

The second year, they bloomed in the spring and were well on their way to maturity.
Reply:You can always go to http://www.1800topsoil.com to see if they have a local pro servicing your area. These guys at http://www.1800topsoil.com are somehow national. I used them in two states. Good luck! Report It

Reply:your Lavender is dying for the outside air and sun! If you don't get it outside in the ground it may die! Plants may do OK for short periods of time indoors but they will soon start looking sick and having problems. As far as the lavender is concerned, you have it on a short leash, in a small cage, in the dungeon! Hardly any plants will do as good indoors as they will outside.
Reply:Most herbs---and that includes lavender---do best in poor soil. I'd stop fertilizing.

If you're growing yours as a houseplant, try setting it outdoors into the ground. Lavender has two main requirements: full sun, and excellent drainage. They hate to be soggy!

Water lightly until it becomes established, then water infrequently. If it's one of the hardier types, it will probably be happier left in the ground. Good luck :)
Reply:try giving it some miracle-grow. yes a little lime, just a pinch or 2 in gallon of water. it don't take much. bone meal is safer to use. also try pruning it back about a 1/3. go to local plant conservatory, if there one in your area, the workers there are helpful with info on plants.
Reply:Miracle Grow is the magic, and the other blooming plant enhancer

I use is Osmocote, slow release fertilizer.

And regular hand watering.

Good LUck!
Reply:I have many plants of lavender, and I don't do much with them, except 2 time during the growing season I feed them Miracle grow plant food. I have them in my front yard in full sun. When I bring the flowers in the house, I let them dry, and I remove the dried flowers and sprinkle them on my carpets, when I am about to vacuum, the whole house smells so nice.
Reply:The trick to Lavender, as well as other aromatics (like rosemary for example) is aerated soil and cool roots. How does one attain this state - in full sun - you ask? I plant these sort of plants in a soil-crumbled up mulch-mix and a bit of pea gravel to ensure drainage. The hole dug is shallow, the plant set in it and the mixture packed in and around it, then pressed in but ending up with a cone... above ground-level. Then, my final touch is a layer of mulch around this cone or mound, then water well. My secret - you're not going to believe it... is Epsom salt. Get a small bag or box, yes the same kind you throw in the bath, and add a tablespoon to the plant, water it in. Osmokote is my favorite fertilizer and Milorganite, an organic fertilizer is my second favorite... neither will burn a plant. Keep rainwater and use on your plants as well. They really respond. Good luck %26amp; happy planting.

How do you extract essintial oils for lavender?

I would like to take my lavender plants and get the essential oils out of it. I need to know how to do this.

How do you extract essintial oils for lavender?
Home distillation equipment can be expensive. But worth it if you are serious about making your own essential oils and hydrosols. It is surprising how much plant material is required to get a small amount of oil. CH Imports sells home hydrosol stills. The idea is simple, make steam and condense it. The plant material is stuffed into a pot with a tight fitting lid and a release for the steam that directs the steam into a vessel where is is collected and cooled. This water is the hydrosol and the oil floats on the top. If you are handy you can make one. Be aware of gravity needed to deliver the steam and the heat generated and the distance needed between heat source and collection container.
Reply:Essential oils are usually extracted from plants by steam distillation. The oil-giving part of the plant is placed inside a stainless steel distillation vat and the extreme pressure of the steam around the vat breaks down the plant material, releasing the essential oil from the plant cells. When cooled, the oils separate naturally from the water. The residual water is used for cosmetic purposes and is known as "floral water". For the most part, essential oils, if packaged properly in dark glass and stored in a cool, dry area, will retain their aroma for years. The quality of an essential oil depends primarily on the growing conditions of the plant: soil, weather and the timing of the harvest will all influence the fragrance, color and potency of the extracted essential oil.

Does lavender and citrus really repel scorpions?

If so, what is better lavender essential oil, dried lavendar or the live plants?

Does lavender and citrus really repel scorpions?
Spiders have no nose for smelling. They don't have a sense of smell as we know it. The hairs on their legs detect movement such as air currents or ground movement.

Scorpions have motion sensors on the tips of their legs also the pectines are feathery sensory organs which hang beneath the abdomen and trail on the ground to detect minute chemical signals. Most scientists think this is more for mating and approach of prey. Whether these pectines would allow the scorpion to react to strong smells such as lavender--I just don't know.

Since scorpions live in dark areas such as crevices, why would a plant act as a deterent?

Is Rosemary and Lavender the same plant, i was in wilkos today and a plant was labelled rosemary/lavender?

I didn't think they were the same? Are they or is Wilkos just thick?

Is Rosemary and Lavender the same plant, i was in wilkos today and a plant was labelled rosemary/lavender?
Nope different plants
Reply:They are not the same plant but they are part of the same family and they both put out purple flowers. The official botanical name for rosemary is "rosmarinus officinalis. Rosemary, as it is known to the general population, is part of the mint family of herbs. This family is described as the Labiatae herb family. Other members of the same family include basil, patchouli, lavender, hyssop, myrtle, mint, clary and sage.
Reply:When I was living in Soutehrn France there were large cultivations of lavender and they are certainly different from rosemary.

They both belong to the same family of plants along with some other well known herbs such as oregano, sage, thyme, mint, basil.

Lavender is also used as a herb in France and in potpourris to scent homes and keep out wool eating moths
Reply:Lavender is a low-growing bush. It's aromatic flowers can be used for making pot-pourri.

Rosemary is a herb which as masses of small flowers. Ideally you can use it for cooking with lamb. Or put some sprigs of rosemary inside the cavity of the chicken before you roast it.
Reply:No, it is not the same plant, of both are many varieties, but I've never seen them crossed yet! Wikipedia gives nice descriptions of them!

Have fun!
Reply:No different plants, i noticed the same thing in Wilkinsons, i think they just use the same label for both as they are the same price.

The lavender will look more silvery and the rosemary more green with a silvery underneath.
Reply:no they're different types of herbs, both smell completly different and are used for different things. i work in a garden centre and we normally put things on the same poster if they are the same price to save time and space.
Reply:Blue, mauve, pink and white – these are the colours of rosemary and lavender flowers, with their evocative scents of Mediterranean hillsides
Reply:they are different plants, the labeling system is for both plants,

e.g. rosemary/lavender---£1-99p its easy to work out!
Reply:They are related,a lavender is a type of rosemary, the flowers are similiar also
Reply:no. The smell, for one, is completely different. I've never sprinkled lavender on my potatoes, and I've never seen Lavender's Baby.
Reply:Nothing like each other! Lavender is a nice smelly flowering herb - Rosemary is darker leafed, and used in cooking!
Reply:no they are not the same two different plants one is a herb, the other a flower/herb
Reply:Wilkos is thick.
Reply:no, two totally different plants and smells
Reply:hehe - they are completely different! Maybe the price was just the same for both?
Reply:I doubt it, they smell very distinct
Reply:mix jelly, butter, salt and cat hairs that should do it
Reply:They must have made a hybrid. either that or the labeller has no interest in plants

One is called sterling silver. There are others, too. Most nurseries carry at least one lavender rose. Some are more pink than lavender though. I think the one called sterling silver is more what you are looking for. Try this link for a picture:

Toddler was sick two nights in a row after I used massage balm on her- is she allergic to lavender?
Although side effects are rare, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction to lavender. Nausea, vomiting, headache, and chills have also been reported in some individuals following inhalation or absorption of lavender through the skin.

I would not continue to rub this ointment on your child she might be allergic to lavender.

I know it is popular in the bath products.

Try skin free, it is the best lotion our daughter has hyper sensitive skin and this lotion works great.

Why is my lavender lying across the path?

I planted a row of lavenders next to the path, but they tend to lie all over the path. Where did I go wrong?

Why is my lavender lying across the path?
No idea, but I know how you can keep them off the path. Run a string between two stakes along the path a little more than 1/2 way up the hight of the plants. thestringwon't be noticeable if there are lots of plants.
Reply:Lavender has a habit of laying down...especially after it blooms. The weight of the flowers pulls the whole stem over. I suggest staking the plants next year.

How do I propagate lavender?

I have a green house, not heated though, and I am eager to learn how to propagate my lavender, I have about 4 different types in my garden, so far I have had no success.

I think that gardening is the new rock and roll !

How do I propagate lavender?
Very easily. Best way. Take cuttings of about five inches off. Not old but new wood. Cut bottom of stem at an angle(like a spear). Get some rooting compound from garden centre. This is usually white or purple powder. Stick cuttings into a plant pot. Either a small pot,or several in a bigger pot. Make sure you fill pot with potting mix first.Place a clear plastic bag over plant, and either tie to sides of pot. Or use a big elastic band and secure bag to pot. Place in warm spot in your green house,or house. Water only occasionally. Lavenders like it dry.Should get heaps. You can use this method with most softwood cuttings. Good Luck!
Reply:These are all great answers.

An idea I came up with out of desperation - had a lavender that was 4' tall and it started dying. I bent over some of the more pliable stems %26amp; put a mixture of coffee grounds %26amp; egg shells over the stems. All the stems took root.
Reply:I just pull off fresh green (new growth) side shoots with the bitty of stem that comes off with it, and stick them in the ground and keep moist. They survive through the winter and then can be planted out in the early summer.
Reply:Could be your compost is too wet - it needs to be only slightly moist, otherwise the cuttings will rot away.

Take cuttings from new growth at the end of the summer, before the weather turns chilly. They can be kept outdoors until it turns cold, then put them in your greenhouse and keep the compost only just moist, almost dry, over winter. When the weather starts warming up again, you can water them slightly more, but, still not enough to make the compost wet.

This way , you should have success with at least half of your cuttings. Good luck!
Reply:Take cuttings in summer and plant out in a cold frame or outdoors in autumn - if they seed themselves you'll find lots of small black seeds - just plant them in a seed tray in a lime based soil which is well drained - they are not easy to propogate from cuttings and you may lose more than survive. Cut off 2 to 4 inch stems at the point where leaves grow and plant them - if you take 20 cuttings - expect only 3 to survive unless you are very lucky
Reply:My method of propagating Lavender is to take nodal or heeled cuttings

in August and root in sand/peat 2-1 mix in a low and shaded frame. Any

lightly shaded cold frame will do but at one time it was common to see

very low frames called 'sun frames' used for the rooting of ripe and

semi-ripe shrub cuttings including conifers, during summer.

Keep as close an atmosphere as you can by having the frame closed and

syringing its contents frequently

OR

pulling off a small side shoot (2"-3") with a

stem which is slightly woody.

Strip off the larger leaves just leaving a little tuft of small leaves at the top.

I dip the end in rooting compound and then put a number of cuttings in normal potting compost around

the edges of a medium sized pot.

You can cover the pot with a clear plastic sandwich bag held on with a rubber band to keep the cuttings humid for the first few days.

Can lavender eyeshadow and black eyeliner look good together?

I'm a blonde with brown eyes, if that makes a difference.

Can lavender eyeshadow and black eyeliner look good together?
Lavender looks good with any eye color as long as you blend. And as far as the black eyeliner, it's a basic that looks good with anything. If you're VERY fair, you might want to go with a brown liner to not be too extreme but there are few women that cannot wear either of these.

Do it!
Reply:Absolutely, as long as you dont over do it. If you are good with liquid liner, use that. Do your eyeliner first, getting a bit thicker towards the outer corners (u want a cat eye type of look). then do the eyeshadow with a pointed eyeshadow brush. You want to follow the line you've done with the eyeliner, but directly above it (so trace along the top of the eyeliner).. and make sure you do it at roughly the same thickness.

If you get any eyeshadow over your eyeliner, re-trace your eyeliner once your done.

If you want a more subtle look, do the eyeshadow first, all over your lids. then use a well-sharpened pencil, or a pointed liquid brush, and draw a very thin line along your eyelashes.
Reply:yes, but you need to be worrying about the skin tone that is going with the lavender eyeshadow....i think that it looks good on brunettes, but keep in mind that lavender "sets off" brown eyes, so therefore u only need a little black eye liner, from the outer edges to the middle of your top lid..... a little bronzer with lavender is nice, also use a nude or light pink lipstick or gloss...........
Reply:absolutely... make sure to blend the colors out, maybe try using a dark purple eyeshadow in the corner, and a plum in the crease. use the lavender as an all over lid color.

try smudging for a more smokey look.

glad to help :]
Reply:i think it depends on wat ur wearing but maybe drop the black eyeliner and just use the lavender eyeshadow.
Reply:yeah, you just have to smoothly apply the eye liner in a thin line and only on the top. And make sure nothing is smudged!!!
Reply:As long as you dont over do the eyeliner, it would look pretty.
Reply:yes, i've used that color combination myself several times
Reply:i think it would look great!
Reply:I think that it might look nice. Just experiment and see what looks good

Anyone know how to extract lavender oil?

We have lavender in the garden and I would like to (a) dry it and also (b) extract the oil to use as flavouring for ice-cream and desserts. Any ideas?

Anyone know how to extract lavender oil?
Well, it's a VERY long and labourious process, that's why it's so expensive, but it's boiled and then the oil is skimmed off the surface, then it's left to 'rise to the surface' again and skimmed to make it more pure - this process is done up to ten times with commercial lavender.

To use it in cakes/biscuits/ice-cream, just use a few flower heads - you'll get a taste without it beng too perfumey.

to dry just hang it in bunches somewhere dry and airy, the heads will fall when it's ready, then keep somewhere or in something non-plastic else freshly dried will go mouldy. To 'fix' the scent in dried lavender, use a little orris root powder - about a teaspoonful to half a pound of lavender
Reply:Using lavender for cooking could well be done by anyone with a mature lavender bush. The flowers can be put in sugar and sealed tightly for a couple of weeks then the sugar can be substituted for ordinary sugar for a cake, buns or custards. And of course the desserts can be decorated with crystallized lavender flowers.

Lavender is not only for sweet dishes. It is also a savory herb. I always add lavender when I am making Herbs Of Provence, the wonderful French spicy mixture of rosemary, savory and thyme often with lavender and basil added. Lavender has a particular affinity for lamb; in fact, in France lambs were grazed on lavender whenever possible. Adding lavender stems to the barbeque and sprinkling the flowers on to the roast will help to impart the flavor to the meat.

Be careful when cooking with lavender only to use a few flowers, as too many will make the food bitter. Always wash them first and do not use if there is any danger of them having been sprayed with insecticide.
Reply:The link below details all of the extraction methods. None of them are easy. Lavendar is not very expensive and maybe you should search for a culinary grade essential oil. Learn the extraction methods so you can ask which method is used. You don't want to flavor your ice cream with solvent extracted lavendar oil.

Can you make tea out of the lavender plant.?

the one i have is lavender haze and someone asked me would that be possible or even just to add a few fresh leaves to tea.it has such a pleasent smell.im sure ive seen lavender tea on shop shelves.

Can you make tea out of the lavender plant.?
Lavender is a very special herbal tisane which has calming effects that helps relieve stress, fatigue, headache and insomnia. Drinking a cup of Lavender tea before going to bed is known to promote restful sleep. This tea blends well with mint leaves. Try it.

Taste:

Soothing and highly aromatic tea with a light and slightly sweet taste. Try blending it with mint leaves for that extra refreshing taste.

Rinse tea cup and teapot with hot water. Use about 2 teaspoons dried lavender flowers for every 500ml of water. Infuse in hot water at 90°c (194°F) to 95°c (203°F) for 2 to 4 minutes for the first and second brewing. Gradually increase steeping time and temperature for subsequent brewing.

.
Reply:You want to use the flowers not the leaves for tea.
Reply:Add a few leaves to a mild blend of tea.
Reply:hi yes you can make a very relaxing soothing tea from lavender, either use the dried flowers and leaves or fresh, either way let it steep in the hot water for a few minutes depending on how strong you like it then enjoy, it also makes an excellent iced tea.
Reply:I would'nt try it because it might not work out the same as tea makers do professionaly.
Reply:Yes, it is possible to make a nice relaxing tea out of lavender. In fact, lavender has been the subject of a number of lively discussions in a gardening forum I'm involved in.
Reply:Any green plant can be used. By pouring hot/boiling water over the 'leaves' you are in fact making TEA or an 'infusion'. It would be preferable to use non-toxic/safe plants, when making your teas. Your library should have many books on the making of teas. Enjoy!!
Reply:Yuk, let's all not go round yours for a brew.

Can someone tell me how to make lavender essential oil from lavender plants, simply?

i have grown lavender flowers blooms are ready for harvesting. how do i make oil

Can someone tell me how to make lavender essential oil from lavender plants, simply?
You cannot make essential oils with a distillation system. You can make a fragrant oil by soaking lavender flowers in an oil, like olive oil or for a lighter oil sesame oil. You leave the flowers in the oil for days maybe a week, then if you want more fragrant oild you strain out the old flowers add new flowers and soak it again, you can do this like 3 times. It's good masage oil, but it is not an essential oil.
Reply:use a light oil like saffflower or use alcohol like vodka or gin and soak and mash the flowers in it and then strain into a atomizer or for more info check the library they can give better info and correct oils and so on
Reply:Quite easily, actually. You're best bet is to let it soak in an oil that you would buy from a natural health food store. Don't use any commercial oils for eating, except for almond oil but then you get that smell too. You could also google it on the internet and get more answers.

How to grow lavender seeds?

My lavender seeds grow just one set of leaves before dying, sunshine doesn't help. I use vermiculite and a little water to house the seeds.

How to grow lavender seeds?
I suspect a fungus They can take a long time to sprout (two weeks or more) and this invites fungus to the seed tray, often causing the seed to rot before it can sprout. Seeds benefit from light, so cover lightly when sowing. The germination temperature should be around 70 degrees and spring seeding is more successful than fall seeding. Those seeds that do sprout will take one to three months before they have enough roots and top growth to allow successful transplanting. Adding fertilizer to the sterile medium used in the seed tray can help the little plants get off to a better start, but it can also invite fungus in cool, humid situations.

This is one of the reasons that most lavenders are started from cuttings taken from Mother plants. This is both fast and accurate, producing an exact replica of the original plant.

I don't want to discourage you from trying seed, however. I hope that this helps and you are successful. Lavender is such a rewarding plant to raise for so many reasons. Best of luck.
Reply:get a potting soil mixture and use that as your medium
Reply:Check ph.
Reply:I have never grown lavender from seeds so I don't know how difficult it is to grow. I bought one plant from a garden center years ago and now I have more lavender than you can imagine so I would say that just buying plants is the way to go.

Whay does Lavender and other pants or scents help you sleep?

I'm doing a science fair project and i'm seeing which sleep aid lotion works best with which ingreedents. i can't find out the reason lavender helps you sleep. i know it relaxes you but how?

Whay does Lavender and other pants or scents help you sleep?
In folklore, pillows were filled with lavender flowers to help the restless fall sleep. There is now scientific evidence to suggest that aromatherapy with lavender may slow the activity of the nervous system, improves sleep quality, promote relaxation, and lift mood in people suffering from sleep disorders.

Psychologists at Wesleyan University asked 31 men and women to sniff lavender essential oil one night--and then distilled water the next--for four 2-minute periods just before bedtime. The researchers monitored their sleep cycles with brain scans. On the night they whiffed the herb, subjects slept more soundly; they also felt more energetic the next morning.

The researchers found that lavender increased slow-wave sleep, the very deep slumber in which the heartbeat slows and muscles relax. During this phase, the brain is thought to organize memory, as well.

Reply:Black = goes with everything ( ever color )

White ( mainly if they are just strappy )
Reply:no black!in this situation your color sounds light so it is better to go with a white shoe, or a color that matches with the dress beads or disigns.
Reply:grey is a great combination with purple. but i would probably go with silver=) that would look really nice, especially for a wedding. too bad its not a dark purple, then yellow would look awesome=(
Reply:dark brown heels would be cute like peep toes or something. or simple black heels.
Reply:you can have certain shoes dyed to match the dress but its up to you
Reply:try some cute black heels
Reply:i would go w/ silver.
Reply:I would suggest black.

And here's a little trick:

And if you have a box of crayons pull out the lavender color and match it up wit other colors then go find a shoe with that color.
Reply:white or silver. black would be too dark for such a light colored dress
Reply:okay.. im not sure about your opinion.. but i would say wear some of the heels that buckles around the ankel with the chain connecting to the lower section, maybe try Gold or Silver. (white)
Reply:Black or white shoes, but check with the other bridesmaids so you all match
Reply:it depends on waht else you are wearing, but i would say white
Reply:welll lavendar , white and i think what would look really classy and nice would be sliver
Reply:I'd go with white, silver, or dyed the same lavender to match your dress. But as others have said, it's best to make sure you're matching the other bridesmaids.
Reply:white high-heel peep toes will look awsome with a lavender dress do NOT use black it will make it look trashy..

What do you do with Lavender?

I have lavender in my yard in a basket, growing and I have no idea what to do with it. But isn't that where you put dried lavender in a little bag or something to smell good? How do you make dried lavender?

What do you do with Lavender?
You can braid it before you dry it. It looks pretty. Maybe put the dried, braided lavender on top of a grape vine wreath?
Reply:I cut it and dry it the way other folks here describe. Then I cut a piece of cheesecloth and tie some of the lavender up in it and stick it in the vent of my car. The car smells SO good, and I like to think that it's keeping me calm on the commute to and from work!
Reply:Cut the lavender, spread it out in the sun, and wait 'til it dries out, then you can bag it.
Reply:pick it, and bind the stems together and hang upside down, preferably in a window, leave it their for about 2 weeks or at least until it is dry then you can do the bag thing, good luck!
Reply:The first link below instructs you on how to havest and in using Lavender. Lavender helps you to relax. I use a drop of lavender oil by putting it under my nose to calm me down if I'm upset.

Can you grow lavender on Oahu?

I live on Oahu on the Windward (aka rainy) side of the island.. I would love to start growing some lavender, but I don't know if it is possible-- anyone know?

Can you grow lavender on Oahu?
Lavender loves the moist climate, but it does not fair well with pounding rains. If you can give it a sheltered place to grow, like under the canopy of a large tree, throw those seeds down...it will flourish!
Reply:I think you can raise anything except potatoes and apples in Hawaii and you can do that probably in the higher elevations of the Big Island.
Reply:It grows here in western Washington on the Olympic Peninsula not far from the rain forests, so I suspect you can grow it there. With your comparative warmth, you may simply have to keep it cut back so that it doesn't run amok! :-)
Reply:protect it from excess rain.

plant it in alkaline soil.

semi sunny position.

protect from western sun.

keep it trimmed so it will stay bushy.

What is the actual smell of lavender essential oil?

I bought the lavender essential oil and it smelled like turpentine oil. Is it the actual smell of lavender oil?

What is the actual smell of lavender essential oil?
It's supposed to smell like lavender.
Reply:Smells like sex and candy...yea.
Reply:You probably purchased a cheap version of lavender oil known as lavender 40/42. It's smells horrible in my opinion. Try a more reputable essential oil company and make sure it's 100% pure lavandula angustifolia or Bulgarian lavender essential oil. It 's scent is sweeter more floral.
Reply:Well, did you buy a reliable essential oil which can be taken internally or is it an oil for burning in the room? The quality is very different and some manufacturers make dubious blends.

In addition, there are five different types of lavender oil on the market and they are all different. One should always go by the latin name as they can have widely different properties

Lavendula angustifolia (or Lavendula vera)

Lavendula burnatii reydovan (not the true lavender but anti-viral)

Lavendula burnatii super (not the true lavender either)

Lavendula latifolia cineolifera (anti-viral)

Lavendula stoechas - which is neurotoxic and abortive if taken too long, but used anyway with cautious as it is very effective in certain types of infections and ear infections.

So, to say you bought Lavender essential oil is too little information. Hope you didn't buy the neurotoxic.

Will lavender survive in the snow belt when plant in first year?

Hello! I'm from Ontario,Canada,I just bought many Lavender plants, will they(Mustead,Hidcote,Lady)survive in the first year from winter outdoor? Do need to prevent for them when snow?

one more question, Do Raccoon like to eat lavender? and there are few bees in front garden, Is good idea if grow Lavender?

Thanks!

Will lavender survive in the snow belt when plant in first year?
Since you bought plants, I should think they'd be well established before the cold hits this fall. " If you live in an area where lavender suffers some winter die-back, don't even think about pruning your plants until you see some new green growth at the base of the plant. If you disturb the plants too soon in the season, they give up trying."

Here's a link to a free e-book on everything lavender...

Happy Gardening!

ps The bees are great for lavender, as they will help fertilize, and no, I don't think Raccoon like to eat it.
Reply:Lavender is quite hardy! The first year, put a bed of hay down and it should do very well...as for the raccoons, I've NEVER heard of them eating lavender as it is a very pungent herb...the bees are attracted to the sweetness of the nectar, but the plant it self is too pungent for MOST animals. I have heard of deer eating lavender.
Reply:We've planted lavender here in WI and recommend a deep covering with straw or leaves for the first couple of years. One year, we unfortunately thought they were old enough and did not adequately cover and lost half of our bed. The remaining plants ,by the end of the season ,did fill in the open areas. Better to be safe than sorry, it can be expensive to keep replanting. Good luck, once established lavender is so fragrant and very hardy.

Air freshner in closet, everything smells lavender, what to do?

I like lavender, but its a bit strong and I don't want people to think that I am getting fresh.

Air freshner in closet, everything smells lavender, what to do?
Once you have removed the source, the smell should start to dissipate. Leave the clostet door open, and maybe even put a little circulating fan pointing in to it to help circulate the air. The lavender smell should pretty much go away in a day or 2.
Reply:Remove the air freshener and hang everything outside to air out. I would wipe down the walls, doors of the closet to remove the remaining scent.
Reply:If your a guy next buy a musk smelling air fresh, open it half way and stick it abouve your clothes....
Reply:remove air freshener, leave door open to air out closet, remove clothes and maybe put on clothes line to air them out a bit.

Lavender, how do i take a cutting?

I'm totally new to gardening and have NEVER took a cutting in my life. We have a beautiful Lavender pot at our front door, but i wouldn't mind taking a cutting or two to eventually plant in pots ready for next year. the only problem is, we don't know where or how to take a cutting

Can anyone help??

Lavender, how do i take a cutting?
I'm from South of France, and usually, we don't do cuttings with lavenders, except if the plant is big enough. The best, I think, is to take a bit of the root along with their following twigs.

The most important I guess is the nature of the earth in which you "re-earth" the cutting.
Reply:You can take a cutting in September. Take a piece with hard wood, break it with a heel, dip it into hormone rooting powder and plant. It should take ok.
Reply:from the new grown if you look you will see the old grown on the stem is more woody looking the new doesn't have the bark type browned look snip there where the two growths join then with a sharp blade slice up the stem a half inch or so and then again in a criscross fashion so you end up with four stems at the bottom gently open slightly dip in water then in rooting powder then put into a bottle of water until wee whitey clear roots start to show then transfer to soil xx
Reply:My lavender has self seeded from the flowers and I have 20-30 seedlings - why not let nature take its course.

Good luck
Reply:Cut about length of your index finger, remove lower leaves about 1" + sink stem into soil (seed and cutting compost) or ordinary garden soil - do not let dry out or become waterlogged - lavender usually likes sunny position with plenty of drainage.

Put as many cutting in as you like can do all in the same post say six around the edge if you like, so long as soil is not too dry or too wet, most all will take.
Reply:to replant lavender you need the roots. when you're ready, dig down below the part of the plant you want to loosen. it can be large or small depending on the size of the plant you want to keep in the original pot. seperate that section from rest of the plant. replant. make sure the soil is pretty wet before you transfer.

How do you use Lavender Munstead?

I just bought Lavender Munstead thinking it was Rosemary, should have looked at the little tag. Anyway my question is How is it used in cooking or can it be used in cooking? Do only use the flowers when it flowers or can I use the leaves regardless of flowering? Any help would be appreciated! Thank You

How do you use Lavender Munstead?
All lavenders are edible. I particuarly like lavender scented shortbread cookies.

Plant in full sun where it won't sit in water---they like it on the dry side. The plant is fragrant, so I like to plant it near walks where I can brush against it and release the fragrance. Bees love the flowers. I always look for ways to provide bee forage.

You can flavor cookies and drinks with lavender and scent your home.

Lavenders are quite cold tolerant woody plants that will last for many many years with little care. Remove last summer's flower stalks in the spring, tidy up the plant, and enjoy.

What can I do to stop my lavender plant's wilting?

I got a freanch lavender plant at trader joe's just 3 days ago. When I bought it it was extremely healthy and no signs of wilting whatsoever. Within a couple of hours the plant was wilting. The soil was adequately moist as it was last wateres at the store, and I didn't water it because the research I had done about lavender says it prefers drier soil and shouldn't be watered too often. I just got it and don't want it to be a waste of money, what should I do?

Thanks

What can I do to stop my lavender plant's wilting?
The first thing to do is to make sure NO AIR is getting around the roots/air pockets providing of course you have just replanted it.

Pathogens

http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/fletcher/staff/j...

The most common disease.......................

.......problem with lavender ..................

..................is wilt........................

Vascular wilts are very destructive diseases with typical symptoms characterized by rapid wilting, browning, and dying of leaves and succulent shoots of plants followed by the death of the plant. English lavender varieties are more susceptible to vascular wilts than lavendin varieties. Dark-flowered cultivars are less resistant to disease than the pale-flowered varieties. Cultivars with gray foliage are quite susceptible to infection. Vascular wilts are most common in the month of August when temperatures reach 90° F and humidity reaches 90%. If damaged plants are present, remove and destroy any infected plant material and avoid replanting with susceptible varieties. Dr. A. O. Tucker advises using one to two inches of white sand as a mulch around plants to reduce fungal pathogen infection. In addition, he found that the sand increased flower and oil production when compared to a control group of plants which were not mulched.

Good Luck!
Reply:It,s probably just readjusting to its new place/soil, give it some time, keep it in a sunny spot also, and do water some even tho lavender does better once established on the dryer side.

Do lavender plants put down long roots?

I want to plant three small lavender bushes directly next to my house, as there is a small soil border adjacent to the building. I am a bit worried lavender might grow huge roots and I won't be able to dig them out and move them if I choose to. I intend to prune them to keep them small. Will this deter the plant from putting down long roots? If so can anyone recommend a nice little shrub that won't grow too big? Thanks,

Do lavender plants put down long roots?
The roots don't grow huge so wont affect your home, lavender will spread like wild fire unless kept cut back, you will be able to dig them out and move them if you want the advantage of lavender next to your home is that it is supposed to stop flies from coming into your home,(though this theory isn't proved) also when you have your windows open the smell will be lovely.
Reply:If you keep them cut like a hedge then you can keep them as tall as you want.

The people who make the lavender oil cut theirs so that the plants only grow about 9 ins tall
Reply:there are some lavender bushes at the house I rent. They are trimmed to stay small and the roots are not that long. So I think you should be fine.

Reply:Lavender meringue ice cream

Ingredients

For the floral sugar (make the week before):

350g/¾lb golden granulated or golden caster sugar

8-16tbsp chopped flower petals

For the meringues (make the day before):

175g/6oz lavender caster sugar

3 large egg whites

For the cream and fruit mixture:

250g/9oz blueberries or 250g/7oz blackcurrants or 750g/1lb10oz fresh, ripe strawberries

2 tbsp kirsch

a few lavender flowers or a few sprigs of lavender

a few sprigs spearmint (optional)

1 tbsp icing sugar, sifted

400ml/¾pt fresh cream for whipping

6 meringues or meringue shells

Method

For the floral sugar:

1. Put the sugar and chopped flowers into a food processor or liquidiser and process well.

2. Put the floral sugar into a glass jar, cover well and let it stand for a week.

3. After a week sift the sugar and flowers through a medium sieve and put into an airtight container. If you wish you can layer it: flowers, sugar, flowers. This looks wonderful and is inspirational, but is not very practical, because when you use the sugar for cooking you could land up having a large flower in the middle of your meringues! Having said that the top layer of sugar tastes marvellous.

For the meringue:

1. Place the egg whites in a very clean bowl and whisk until they form soft peaks that slightly tip over when you lift the whisk.

2. Add the caster sugar, about a tbsp at a time, and continue to whisk until each tbsp of sugar has been thoroughly whisked in.

3. Using two dessertspoons, fill one with meringue mix and use the other to scoop the mixture out onto a lined baking tray in neat rows.

4. Place the baking tray in the oven on the centre shelf, heated at 140C/275F/Gas 1, and cook for 1 hour.

5. Turn the oven off and leave the meringues in the oven to dry out overnight, or until the oven is completely cold.

For the cream and fruit mixture

1. Wash and dry the fruit. Set aside some perfect specimens for decoration.

2. Sprinkle the chosen fruit with the liqueur, dust with icing sugar and refrigerate for an hour or two. Whip the cream and chill.

3. Roughly crush the meringue.

4. When you are ready to serve, gently toss the cream, meringue and fruit and pile into a glass bowl. Scatter the whole fruit on top, decorate with lavender and mint and serve. Alternatively freeze the meringues, fruit and cream mixture. (It is important to serve the pudding as quickly as possible after you have taken it from the freezer. If you leave it a room temperature for too long it will go soggy).
Reply:Just crush a few up and add it to shortbread- not too much or it will end up tasting like soap. Use it as you would rosemary.

What can I do with dried lavender?

A friend of mine just gave me 2 big bundles of dried lavender, and I was wondering what I can do with it to get the most out of the beautiful scent... can I simmer it? How would I make an essential oil out if it? All suggestions welcome :)

What can I do with dried lavender?
Just enjoy it as a dry boquet. You can later remove the buds and keep them in a smaller dish. You can make an infused oil. (Directions are easily found, basically you use a high-quality base oil that you would use on your body, add the plant material, heat and strain. You may need to refrigerate the end product if the plant material was not completely dry.) To make an essential oil you will need much more than 2 big bundles. You can make a home still, but unless you are serious about manufacturing essential oils, just stick with the infusion.

Should i really let my lavender germinate in the fridge?

this lavender guide book told me to put the newly planted seeds in the fridge for two weeks..how often should i water them..and should i ever take them out and put them into sun for some hours during this 2weeks?

Should i really let my lavender germinate in the fridge?
You moisten (not wet!) your soil thoroughly and then leave them alone for at least a week. If you cover your container with clingfilm, (which you certainly would do anyway for hygiene reasons) they won't dry out. After that you can have a look, but more likely it will take at least 12-15 days. Some plants like lavender or pansies don't like light for germination, others, like poppy, need it.

What is the precipitate that results from blending Dr.Bronner Lavender Castile Soap and Magnesium Sulfate?

When I mix these two in solution a precipitate forms at the bottom. It is a waxy substance with a seemingly higher concentration of lavender oil than the castile soap normally has. My hypothesis is that the epsom salt is dissolving the water soluble parts of the soap into the solution and leaving behind the lipophilic and phenolic compounds in the soap.

What is the precipitate that results from blending Dr.Bronner Lavender Castile Soap and Magnesium Sulfate?
This is a really nice question.

The main constituent of soap is sodium stearate, possibly mixed with the sodium salts of other fatty acids. In fact, the word "soap" in chemistry means any dispersible salt of a long chain fatty acid. Notice that I said "dispersible", not "soluble". This is because soaps in water form colloidal aggregates called micelles, with the negative charge outwards and the hydrocarbon chains pointing inwards. This is connected with their surfactant and grease-removing action. Perhaps you know all this already.

Magnesium stearate does not disperse, but forms a soft waxy precipitate. (So does calcium stearate, which gives you the scum on bathwater in hard water areas.)

I think it is brilliant of you to notice that the lavender oil tends to attach itself to the magnesium stearate. This is a result of the hydrophobic attraction between the stearate hydrocarbon chain and the organic molecule.

There is actually quite a lot of research on the use of systems related to this one in the removal of unwanted organics from water.

I just bought a lavender plant?

im not sure what kind of lavender plant it is. its small and kind looks like a little tree. anyways i was wondering if i can gow it in the house or do i need to put it outside? also once it grows how do i use it?

I just bought a lavender plant?
Put it outside in an area that gets at least six hours of sun per day. Do not overwater. When the lavender blooms, pick at least half of it, tie it in bundles and place upright in two inches of water. It will dry like that, and then you just take the scissors and snip off the part that was in water. Tie a pretty ribon around it and you are good to go. Lay it on your bedside table or put it in a vase. Lavender is soothing and helps you get to sleep.
Reply:Outside, they need sun....six hours direct sun...or more. You can keep it in a pot but realize outside it will dry out faster.......so test the soil often.
Reply:Lavendar plant grow best outside. snip the flowers of and put then between the pillow and pillow case, it helps you sleep better, dry flowers and and put them in cloth bags as a sachet for drawers and closets, add them to fower arrangement. There are many lavendar varieties, English lavendar is the most popular.
Reply:Lavender grows best outside in full sun. It is a perennial which means it grows fuller each year's blooming season, which is now for my lavender. Be careful about where you plant it to make sure it has lots of room next season.

You can dry lavender blooms for potpourri, tea, etc.. It is a very fragrant flower. Good Luck.
Reply:Lavender grows best outside. It spreads nicely and puts off a nice smell. You can even dry some to use in dresser drawers.
Reply:yes, they need to be kept outside

Where can I find lavender sugar?

Does anyone know of any supermarkets (wal-mart, winn-dixie, or publix) that sells lavender sugar? I need it asap so I can't make any myself.

Where can I find lavender sugar?
try whole foods market, trader joe's or cost plus world marketplace.
Reply:You probably won't find it in a normal grocery. Check a gourmet shop or a cake supply shop. They will carry it. Good Luck ...
Reply:Simply mix either dried or fresh lavender flowers with sugar and place in a lidded container. Store in a warm place for 1-2 weeks, shaking the container occasionally to distribute the lavender among the sugar. Sift the sugar to remove the lavender heads and store the scented sugar in a airtight container. For 1 cup of sugar, use either 2 tbps of dried lavender or 4 tbsps of fresh.

Words of wisdom on lavender plants?

I just bought two lavender plants and now have them in gallon-size earthenware planters. They're doing well, but I just want to make sure I don't kill them!

Words of wisdom on lavender plants?
the key thing to remember about lavender is that it needs excellent drainage. Make sure you have adequate drainage holes in the bottom of your pots. A layer of sharp sand or small gravel a few inches deep at the bottom of the soil will ensure proper drainage.

Make sure they get a lot of sunshine (at least 8 hours direct sun a day, 10 is better). Water them regularily, but only if they have adequate drainage. dont fertilize, or fertilize minimally. Keep in mind that earthenware or terra cotta planters dry out faster than plastic or wooden pots.

If you live where the winter gets colder than zone 6, you'll have to plant them in the ground at least a month before fall freeze-up; they wont survive winter in a pot in zone 5 and colder.
Reply:dont over water them they are from hot climate and when they have flowered cut them back hard.you wont go far wrong with this advice.if you fail to cut them back hard they will go all woody ugly and die not long after.hope this helps
Reply:I live in SF near the coast and for the most part, they really thrive out here. I purchased a variety that was too delicate and didn't survive after I put it into the ground in the back yard. Sandy soil and fog, cool weather out here.

The delecate one was OK when left in the container in the patio area; but after being replanted out in my sandy soil, it wouldn't grow, some branches turned brown, leaves died -- eventually entire plant died. I had no way of knowing that the plant wouldn't like it out in the yard. Maybe I should have rescued it sooner and repotted it. I have four or five other lavendar bushes -- all different and all hardier.

Helen might have hit on the reason my plant died. Too cold here and when I saw the branches and leaves dying, I watered more, thinking it wasn't getting enough water.

Garden plants with lavender-purple or white blooms that look like a cat's face?

Can anyone tell me the name of a plant that grows to be about 2-3 feet tall and the center of the bloom looks like a cat's face and the leaves look like cat paws? The colors are range from lavender-purple sometimes a dark pink with some white.

Could you be talking about the Cleome plant. Another name is called cat's whiskers.

Reply:I guess you would need to boil up a quantity of lavender in water, then add the strained end product to the vinegar. Or you could blend a quantity of lavender and add it straight to the vinegar. Or you could buy some lavender oil and add some drops to the vinegar.
Reply:this site has a couple of recipies for lavender vinegar

How do I "scare" away bees, so I can harvest my Lavender?

I planted some lavender last year for landscaping purposes, this year its grown like mad, so I'd like to try and havest some for various recipes. BUT, the lavender is very popular with bees. There are TONS of various bumble and honey bees buzzing all over the lavender. I am petrified of Bees. Is there a good way to "scare" off the insects and bees, so I can harvest without having buzzing things flying around?

I don't want to use pesticides, as the lavender is lovely and ready to cut already. I just want them "gone" while i'm busy. They're more than welcome to the leftovers. :P

Suggestions?

How do I "scare" away bees, so I can harvest my Lavender?
Wait for a very windy or very rainy day. Sure this makes it no fun for you, but at least you'll be dealing with less bees.

Using smoke methods works for honey hives, but probably not for lavender since its out in the open. And even when you smoke bees you're not getting rid of them, you're simply forcing them to quiet down and be less active.
Reply:my husband pets bumble bees. swear to God... Report It

Reply:I keep bees. They are more active during the sunnier hours. You should be safe harvesting lavender early in the morning and as the day turns into evening.
Reply:There might be one trick. A person told me that inflating a paper bag and hanging it in trees around your yard will discourage wasps and bees from building nests nearby; has something to do about territory. It might be something worth trying; though in all honesty I have never tried this trick.

Now since you don't want the bees to be discouraged from visiting your lavender, since pollination has likely resulted in your record growth, you might consider hanging a bag above the lavender only for brief periods of time.
Reply:Dear Friend, buy yourself some Skin-So-Soft and put on your body. The bees will leave you alone.

Bees are only aggressive when they are swatted at or feel threatened. They are simply doing their job of pollinating. You can work around them.

Another thing: There is not a bee exterminator because it is against the law to exterminate bees. You may exterminate wasps but never bees. They are becoming an endangered species.

I have a huge Bumblebee that loves my lavender. It doesn't bother me at all and I believe it is because of the Skin-So-Soft. I also believe there is another product to protect you that contains the same ingredient, I just don't know the name. If you have no Skin So Soft, then use an insect repellent while you work with the lavender. your friend, dd.
Reply:do it in the dark not to destirb them
Reply:I am afraid and deathly allergic to the Bee sting, so I know how you are feeling.

I would try harvesting on a cloudy day. They don't seem to swarm on rainy days which leads me to another possible solution.

Try misting the area with your garden hose to chase them away temporarily.

btw--I'm envious of your crop. I finally planted some Lavender this Summer and can't wait until I see the results that you have. :)))

Good Luck !!
Reply:You don't "scare" them away. Use a smoke machine to put them in a trance. This is what beekeepers use to get the honey from the honeycombs.
Reply:My husband is a bee exterminator. He said there is really nothing you can use to chase them away. However, if you harvest at night time they are not active at all.

His answer may be best, but I also thought maybe you could use a very powerful industrial type fan to move them while you harvest. Good luck and "Bee" careful!
Reply:Wear very protective clothing and use smoke to drive them away while you harvest. alternitavely, you can pick them anytime hen they'e not on one, because they'll only attack when you annoy them. They die after they sting.

Lavender makes an excellent companion plant for almost anything from roses to cabbage. It is one of those herbs that deer avoid, making it a great choice as a decoy in your flower beds.

Lavender flowers are also edible. Add the flower to vinegars or jams. Crystallize the flower to decorate desserts. The pulverized flowers will add a unique flavor to custards, salads, and sugar cookies. Lavender sugar cookies are especially elegant. Lavendar flowers can be used raw in salads, added to soups and stews, used as a seasoning, baked into cookies and brewed into tea.

What can I do with fresh Lavender?

I have a big plant of lavender growing and I was wondering what I could make with it? What are some recipies I could use this for? Do I have to dry it out first?

What can I do with fresh Lavender?
Yes, you should dry it. Try putting some in your bathwater for a relaxing and sensual bathtime treat!

Also, you can taking a men's sport sock and fill it with a mixture of dried lavendar and buckwheat groats (available at any health food store). Tie it up with a ribbon, put it in the microwave for a couple minutes and then place around your neck and shoulders for some soothing aroma therapy!
Reply:drying is best. Make TEA. It's realy good for your skin.
Reply:You can put some in a calico bag and put it in your drawers to keep the insects away, as well as puting some in you pillowslip
Reply:you usually dry it first, yes, It can be used in any flower arrangement, or in many arts and crafts. You can add fresh lavendar to a bath for a very nice, relaxing scent. You can also use fresh or dried lavendar and add it to hot water, then smell....If you happen to be building a home, in the olden days they would put lavendar in the walls during the building process. You can still faintly smell lavendar years and years later.
Reply:Though we tend to think of lavender as a scent rather than a flavoring, it is sometimes used in cooking. Here are a couple of recipes for you to try:

LAVENDER TEA BREAD

3/4 cup milk

2 Tbsp. dried lavender flowers, finely chopped, or 3 Tbsp. fresh

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/4 tsp. salt

6 Tbsp. butter, softened

1 cup sugar

2 large eggs

Grease a 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Heat milk with lavender almost to a boil, then let steep until cool. Mix flour, baking powder and salt together in bowl. Cream butter, gradually add sugar, then eggs, one at a time, beating until light and fluffy. Add flour mixture alternately with lavender milk, in 3 different batches. Mix until batter is just blended, do not overbeat. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 50 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool in pan 5 min., then remove to a wire rack to cool. When completely cool, ice with a powdered sugar glaze made with 3 Tbsp. milk and enough powdered sugar to make a thick but still runny paste if desired. Garnish with sprigs of fresh lavender around cake, or sprinkle additional finely chopped lavender on glaze before it hardens.

LAVENDER LEMONADE, with a Sparkling Lemonade option

Cover 1/4 cup lavender flowers with 1 cup boiling water and let steep 10 minutes. Strain. Combine lavender infusion with 1 12 oz. can frozen lemonade concentrate. Add 1 quart water. Chill and serve over ice, decorated with fresh lavender sprigs. To make Sparkling Lavender Lemonade, fill glass 1/2 full of Lavender Lemonade over ice, then top up with ginger ale or a lemon-lime soda such as Sprite.

And, since any lavender discussion ought to include a potpourri recipe, here is a great one, adapted from one in the book 'Lavender, Sweet Lavender' by Judyth McLeod, Kangaroo Press, 1989. This book is a great resource if you are looking for any type of lavender information.

LAVENDER SUMMER POTPOURRI

(all ingredients are dried):

4 cups lavender flowers

1 cup mixed culinary herbs, such as oregano, basil, thyme and rosemary

1/2 cup southernwood

2 cups pink rosebuds and petals

1 cup spearmint

1/4 cup chopped orris root or other fixative mixed with 1 tsp. essential lavender oil

Combine all ingredients and store in a glass jar or zip lock bags for 2 - 4 weeks to allow it to blend. Display in pretty glass or ceramic bowls, or put into sachets or sacks.

Speaking of essential lavender oil, it is the most widely used and versatile healing oil used in aromatherapy. Not only is it very effective, it is also very safe and easy to use. It is the only essential oil generally recommended as safe to apply 'neat' or undiluted to the skin. It is used as a first aid measure to treat minor burns in much the same way aloe gel might be applied. It promotes healing of minor cuts and scrapes, and helps prevent scarring. It is antiseptic and is used in a wide variety of herbal beauty products, and in many insect repellent mixtures. Research has shown it helpful in promoting restful sleep and as an aid for headaches when a drop is massaged into the temple area or onto the back of the neck. The balancing properties of lavender help correct anxiety, nervousness and other emotional problems. Try a drop or two on your pillow at night, in a warm bath, or on a tissue or handkerchief when traveling.

Few other herbs offer so much in so many different ways. In today's fast passed lives, lavender continues to prove its value as one of the most rewarding and useful herbs.

I hope you have enjoyed this introduction to lavender.
Reply:Dried lavender is also good for keeping mosquito's at bay!!!
Reply:I heard the aztecs used to rub it on balls, to ward off evil scotum spirits! I could be wrong though.
Reply:Dry it and make sachets for your lingerie and linen drawers. You can put dried lavender in your closets too. Make lavender-infused almond or olive oil, and use it for a soothing and moisturizing bath and body oil. Mix it with sugar and olive or almond oil, and use it as an exfoliating body scrub.

I have also had lavender-infused creme brulee and gelato, but I don't know how to make them. Wish I did!
Reply:Stuff it up your nose
Reply:I love lavender myself! Once I was invited by some friends for lunch, and she decorated the table with fresh lavender flower. The fragrance was so pleasant through out the meal. After you always can allow then to dry and place in your bath room, quest bathroom or bedroom. Inside your closet and I am sure you will find millions of great ideas to how to use it. If at any time you will offer some one flowers add some few lavender on the bouquet I am sure the person will appreciate.
Reply:After you dry the lavender you can put it in a little lace pouch. Put it in your closets.. and when it seems like it doesn't smell anymore squeeze it a couple times, the smell will come back. It lasts for a long time.
Reply:Wow, you are lucky; I love lavender. Make sure you dry it out first and then you can use it to scent your closets and other areas where you want to freshen the air. It's also good to put in your bath as its scent is very relaxing.
Reply:You can make lavender water by placing distilled water in a non-aluminum pan, heating it just before boiling and then pouring the water and a handful of lavender buds *either dried or fresh* into a bottle. Cork the bottle and keep it in a place that is out of the sun for a couple of weeks, shaking it occasionally to mix it up. It is awesome to spritz on your linens and all sorts of things like your drawer liners, your stationary, etc. I also use the buds in potpourri and to make sachets.
Reply:Dry it out a use it as air freshener

How far back should I cut lavender?

I think it's English lavender.

How far back should I cut lavender?
When the flowers have started to fade, cut back the foliage to leave about 2cm of green leaf. This will keep the plant nice and compact. Left unpruned the plant will get leggy. Lavender doesn't tend to grow back from old wood so don't cut back beyond the green.
Reply:as far to the stem as possible to ensure it stays fresh as long as possible and you maximise the lovely smell
Reply:Lavender flower wand stems are usually a bright green while Lavender leaves are gray. Cut back not only the flower stem, but also about a third of the gray-leaved stems as well. If the plant has been neglected, it can be cut back further, but avoid pruning back so far that only woody stems with no leaves are showing. A plant pruned into the wood may push out latent (sleeping) buds or it may die.
Reply:If you still want to have the full benefit of any lavender this year then just tidy it up for now. Cut it right back anytime during winter making sure that all the woody bits that remain are underground.
Reply:Don't cut it just yet, bees like lavendar bzzz, let them have their dinner first, then cut it right back :)
Reply:4 gardening questions. Methinks you should visit your library and do some swatting up. It will get you out of the house too. I think you should........
Reply:Cut it right back - to almost where it joins the roots - otherwise it will get really woody/leggy.
Reply:was gutted when i went to France in August and lavender fields were finished + cut right back

but I only cut the flower heads of mine when nearly finished (for house-hold things; put by radiators, etc), and is getting huge and gorgeous!

so wait 'til bees are finished and drying, may have a small 2nd crop
Reply:I'm not sure but i'll ask my bf he's a landscape gardener.
