What do you do with herbs like rosemary, mint, lavender other than cooking, or making teas?

I have a big garden that grow beautiful rosemary, lavender, oregano, thyme, and mint. I use them for cooking and tea, but of course only a small amount is consumed compared what was grown in the garden. Any suggestions? If you have recipies of making herbal soaps, shampoo, or some kind of natural toner, that will be great! Thanks!

What do you do with herbs like rosemary, mint, lavender other than cooking, or making teas?
Make potpourri, sachets, flavored vinegars, lavender is especially nice used in dried arrangements - just gather up a big bunch with a rubber band, trim the ends and tie a pretty ribbon around it. You can just stand it on a candle plate or by itself once it's dried, OR poke them into a styrofoam ball and make a hanging potpourri/ornament.
Reply:Hang in bunches around kitchen for nice smell
Reply:Mojitos! Best drink in the summer, and a great way to use up some of that mint:

Muddle some mint in a glass

1 part light rum

3 parts Rose's Mojito mix

squeeze of lime

ice

Shake and strain into martini glass with a mint sprig, very refreshing!

Also re: other herbs, I make lavender wreaths and add other dried flowers with hot glue. They last about 2 years.

Good luck!
Reply:Rosemary can be sleep inducing..Youc an put it in your pillow case and it is supposed to induce sleep and give you better sleeping time...You can take lavender and rosemary together and tie in a cloth boil it for about 5 minutes then add to hot water in a running bath for a good skin cleansing, and again if bath is right before bed ..it induces sleep...
Reply:Search for the remedies you can make from them. You can also dry them up and make powder inscence.
Reply:Hi:

Sounds like you have a wonderful herb garden. I have grown thousands of herbs and it is one of my favorite plant families. There are so many different things you can do with herbs. Culinary use of herbs have become so popular over the last few years. So many professional chefs and everyday cooks use basic culinary herbs in a variety of dishes. Rosemary is wonderful on pork or beef roasts. Chives, Thyme and Basil worked wonders in a topping over vegetables, soups or salads. Herbs are wonderful in making vinegar, drying for aroma as well as providing a display in an arrangement. I will link you to the spices and herb section of my website. There are some different herbs and spices to look at as well as making herb vinegars and other topics.

I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through as there are many articles, tips and techniques on a variety of different topics. I hope some of this information will help you out and good luck to you! Have a great day!

Reply:Put them in little cloth bags and put them in your pillow and dresser drawers and closet.
Reply:Potpourri, herbal wreaths, topiarys. Maybe you can find some more information at www.bluelabelherbs.com or you can ask on their forum and their grower may have some good ideas.
Reply:Here are some easy ways to make soap and shampoo

Shampoo- Combine a cup of water and 5 tblsp dried herbs or if using fresh herbs use more.Bring to the boil then take off the heat and steep for 20mins.Strain out the herbs and mix the herb liquid with 2/3 cup baby shampoo.

Mint and sage are good for oily hair,Rosemary and chamomile are good for dry hair

Liquid gel Soap- Mix 2 cups grated soap( plain white unscented bar) with 1/2 gallon herb scented water (made as in shampoo) and 2 tbsp glycerine in a large pot or pan. Set on a LOW heat until the soap has dissolved.Cool a little then transfer to jars. You can increase the ammount of water if you want a runnier soap.

To make soap from scratch you will need Lye, oil and water but I've never tried it as it sounds very time consuming and risky as far as burning and fumes are concerned. There may be somebody out there that can contradict this.

Chamomile astringent-(toner)

1/2 cup fresh chopped mint

2 tbsp dried chamomile flowers crushed

4 cups water

Combine ingredients in a saucepan, boil 10 mins. Take off the heat and leave 5 mins.Strain into jars and refridgerate . Will keep for 2 weeks.
Reply:You can use them to infuse oils, usually olive oil. I've made rosemary salt by mixing a little rosemary (whole, not chopped) with a lot of kosher salt.

Fresh herbs are great in a warm foot bath, or put them in a cheescloth bag to scent your bathtub or a hot tub.

Or dry, crush and bottle them and give them to friends and family.
Reply:they make beautiful plants for landscaping. put mint in its own container as it will overtake other plants. your yard will smell delicious.

Is it okay to use Lavender pillow spray during the first trimester?

I've been using it on and off because of insomnia and recently read that lavender shouldn't be used during the first trimester. Does the spray apply? It is infused with lavender oils, but I'm just smelling it.

Is it okay to use Lavender pillow spray during the first trimester?
I could have sworn that lavendar oil was one of the safest oils for use in pregnancy and with new babies.

It also has less effect inhaling as applying to skin.

Speak to your doctor if worried or NHS helpline if in UK to save bothering your doctor.
Reply:I kept getting headaches in my first trimester and went to see a herbalist - she gave me lavender oil to rub on my temples after looking it up to check it was safe - dont know about spray but surely it can't be that different?

What are some ideas to do with fresh lavender?

I have a lavender plant in my back yard and I would like some ideas on what I can do with it? I know there are endless possiblities. I just need some suggestions.

What are some ideas to do with fresh lavender?
You can try drying it out and smoke it
Reply:Definitely hang some up to dry to make potpourri or sachets for the winter. Also you can simmer some in an old pot to make the house smell nice. Try simmering it for hours to reduce, then filter to keep an nice lavender water on hand, you can use it as a spray later. Of course they still look good in flower arrangements.
Reply:it makes good popuri and your house will smell great. also if you crush some fresh lavender and mix it with water 3/lavender 1part/water. let it sit in a close container for about a weeks or a little less if you want and it works like a spray to use around the house for a lavendy smell it also helps sooth you and calm and relax you and anyone in the house
Reply:Ummm.. you can put it in little fabric sachets [made by you] and use them to freshen up your drawers and wardrobe and make them smell like lavender.

That's all I can think of for now.

:/
Reply:Cut the end of a old pair of stockings, put some lavender inside and tie up. Put in clothes drawer, hang in closet, put anywhere really.

What is the best time to grow lavender and dasiy in florida?

me and my family wants to grow a flower garden but we just moved to florida and we don't know the growing season. The plants we want to grow is simple really going straight down from a list-

catnip

rosemary

marigolds

lavender

daisy

pepper

onion

carrots

and tomatoes

but we have no Ideal when to start growing!!!!!!!!

What is the best time to grow lavender and dasiy in florida?
Onions need to be planted in the fall as they are a cool season plant. It's hard to keep lavender alive in the heat of Florida. Be careful of catnip. It is very invasive and you may have every cat in the neighborhood playing at your house. The rest are fine. I have had my veggies and spring flowers in the ground for 2 weeks already. Zone 8B.
Reply:you can start know i lived in florida 7 yrs and know would be a good time to start.

Is it possible to grow lavender in Puerto Rico?

I'm trying to start a container garden in my patio and I wanted to know if lavender would be possible to have with puertorican weather.

Is it possible to grow lavender in Puerto Rico?
Yes, you should be fine with lavender. There are many varieties, from Old English, French, Spanish etc. and all have slightly different growing requirements. Most are frost hardy too, though this shouldn't be a big issue for you. My favourites (differing scents):

Lavendula dentata - French Lavender - wonderful, 'butterfly' like petals on this type.

Lavendula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ - beautiful dark blue 18'' tall.

Lavendula stoechas - Spanish lavender, wonderful 'butterfly' like 'petals', similar to French lavender.

Raise your flower-bed used for planting, to allow water to run-away as well as mix with coarse gravel and some sand. Prune hard each year, in fall and again in early spring, to maintain bushy plants.

Good luck! Rob
Reply:The main enemy of lavender from seed is the winter. Until the lavender has a nice woody stem, it will die very easily in cold. But as you live in a nice warm area, this shouldn't be a problem. My grandfather lives in El Salvador and i have a HUGE lavender monster there. But, like they said, if the soil stays wet, it will die. An easy way to help with this is to mix some sand (beach sand is fine) into the soil where you plan to plant it (re gardless of if it's in the ground or not)
Reply:Yes. Lavender can grow in many climates all the way up to Canada and down to the equator outdoors.
Reply:of course u can! lavender hates wet feet so keep it well drained. also if starting from seed, it might not bloom the first year. it's better to get some thats already started then grow from there! "good drainage" is a must with this plant or it will die easily!

Is it possible to keep lavender all year round as a house plant?

I have so many lavender plants that I have grown from seedlings and I do not have anywhere left to go with them outside! Is it possible to keep some of them around the house as "house plants"? If this is possible...how would I care for them indoors?

from what I've read lavender needs the

winter to survive

i had lavender die this winter because it was so mild

What colors complement lavender and pale yellow?

I am repainting my house, and the main colors will be a very light, lavender-like purple and a very pale, soft yellow (I'm a fan of purple and yellow flowers). However, I don't want the entire house looking like purple and yellow, but I can't decide what other colors will match (for trim, closed-off rooms, et cetera). Any ideas on what colors might go well with these?

What colors complement lavender and pale yellow?
I think a green would look great with them. You like purple and yellow flowers...get the color of stems or grass green. Maybe a forest green or hunter green would work.
Reply:light blue
Reply:a lighter shade of brown would look really nice with lavender and pale yellow.
Reply:Choose colors that you like to look at.Sage or light green would be nice as well as a creamy white.Sounds as though you like soft pastels.A light blue would look good as well.Nothing wrong with keeping the same colors throughout the house, just change the accents colors in each room.

It works out well to choose three colors of the same value and use these throughout the house.
Reply:white or a muted gray.
Reply:trim i would do an antique white and the other room i would do a peach color it goes well with the two other colors.

Lavender Pizza with Cherry Tomatoes

1 Recipe Lavender Pizza Dough (see below)

Flour

2 Tb Fine Olive Oil

1 c Coarsely grated Mozzarella cheese (approximately 4 oz)

2 - 4 oz Sliced Aged Asiago cheese

1 ½ c Cherry Tomatoes cut in half (Use Yellow tomatoes or mix colors)

½ c Thinly Sliced Yellow Bell Peppers

Make the pizza dough and let rise.

Thirty minutes before baking, place a pizza stone on the bottom shelf of the oven and set oven to 500 degrees.

On a floured surface, divide the dough into 2 pieces and form into round balls. (Put one dough ball aside.) On the floured surface with your hands pat out and stretch dough evenly into a 9-inch round, keeping hands flat. (Do not handle dough more than necessary. If dough is sticky, dust it lightly with flour.)

Dust baker's peel with flour and carefully transfer inch round. Jerk peel once or twice and, if dough is sticking, lift dough and sprinkle flour underneath it, reshaping dough if necessary. Brush olive oil over dough leaving a 1-inch border and sprinkle with Mozzarella cheese. Arrange tomato halves and pepper strips over Mozzarella, then add slices of Asiago on top.

Line up far edge of peel with far edge of stone and tilt peel, jerking it gently to start pizza moving. Once edge of pizza touches stone, quickly pull back peel to completely transfer pizza to stone. Bake pizza until dough is crisp and brown, about 8 to 12 minutes, and transfer with peel to a cutting board.

Cut pizza into slices and serve immediately. Make a second pizza with the remaining ingredients.

Makes 2 9-inch pizzas.

Lavender Pizza Dough

Equipment needed: 2 mixing bowls

2 tsp Active Dry Yeast

¾ c plus 2 Tb Lukewarm water (110 degrees)

2 c Unbleached bread flour

2 Tb Olive oil

½ tsp Sea salt

1-2 tsp dried Lavender (be sure to experiment and find out if you like a lot or a little of the dried Lavender in your crust)

In a bowl, combine the yeast, ¼ cup warm water, and ¼ cup flour. Let it stand for 30 minutes. Add the remaining 1 ¾ cup flour, ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons warm water, olive oil, salt, and lavender. Mix the dough thoroughly and turn out onto a floured surface. Knead until smooth, elastic, and a bit tacky to the touch, 7 to 8 minutes. Place in an oiled bowl and turn to cover with oil. Cover with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in the refrigerator overnight. (This is very important to get the true taste of lavender in the dough.) The next day, let it come to room temperature and proceed with the recipe.

Is it safe to use lavender essential oil in cooking?

I saw it in a recipe used in a newspaper, but I don't know if you have to use it in a special way.

Is it safe to use lavender essential oil (the pure stuff, obviously) in cooking?

I know that lavender and tea tree are the only ones you can apply neat.

Is it safe to use lavender essential oil in cooking?
You can use essential oils in cooking. If you have a recipe I would suggest that you follow it for the essential oil in question. I use essential oils in cold dishes and salad dressings. If you want to add essential oils to cooked dishes, they need to be added at the end when you have taken the pan off the heat. Baked items are treated differently.

Lavender and Tea Tree aren't the only essential oils that can be used neat. Additionally, not all Lavender should be used neat. There are many species and cultivars of Lavender, some are chemically irritating and should be avoided if you intend to use them directly on the skin. Officinalis and angustifolia are OK to use neat.
Reply:There are a number of different lavender plants. Some are used exclusively for cooking and some exclusively for "pest control".

The essential oils may be ok for cooking, but I would look for those that are from the "food" lavender extraction.

I have a very lovely friend who has a lavender farm. They are extracting the oils from different lavender plants and experimenting with how to use them. She gave me some "lavender brown sugar" to sprinkle on foods. It has lavender heads all through it. Such a treat!!!
Reply:Yes, it is safe to cook with essential oils as long as it's a pure one. But seldom people use lavender for cooking. I know some of them would.

Most of the oil they used for cooking are lemon oil, oregano oil and ginger oil.

check this site for the recipe.
Reply:Yes it is safe. It only requires a little bit though. I have used lavender, oregano, ginger, and several other EOs for cooking.
Reply:if you think that sounds nice then yes ok then!!

How do you go about growing lavender plants?

I really like the smell of lavender, and would like to have some lavender plants outside my windows. I know that they are parennial plants, but do you start them from seeds? Are lavender plants like peony in that you have to buy the plant of-shoot of a mature plant? What is the best way to grow lavender plants?

How do you go about growing lavender plants?
Your local nursery will have at least 1 variety of Lavender. Or you can grow your own from seed, it's your choice. Some tips for growing it.....they do not like wet feet! Do not thirst them to death....but let the soil dry between waterings. Also they do not like a lot of fertilizer so use it very sparingly. Trim the faded blooms to encourage new blooms and if it gets too large do not be afraid to cut it back hard. It will regrow and re-bloom all over again! Lavender is a great plant, and I love the smell too! Have fun and good luck!
Reply:You're welcome! Thank YOU for choosing my answer! Enjoy your Lavender! Report It

Reply:They're easiest to buy in small pots in the herb section of a nursery; but you can also get them in 1 gallon pots. There are many beautiful varieties, heights and colors--all of which have a very pleasant scent. I just set them out in my garden (in a sunny spot).
Reply:I grow lavender and I just bought the plants already started at the nursery and set them out like any other. They took off really well. I have seperated them a couple of times. It shouldn't be any problem to find them at the nursery and home and garden centers.
Reply:If you can't find any plants already started Burpee has a seeds in variety called 'Lavender Lady' that states it blooms the first year. Grows to about 18". I started these myself in two small flats. You get a ton of seeds in the package and it costs about $1.07. Hope something from this helps

How do I maintain Lavender and Rosemary if I have them in 2 separate containers in my bedroom?

I want to know what I do with it after it has grown a foot tall. i've been watering it everyday while being in my bedroom. Is lavender low or high maintenance? When is the best time to grow lavender? Is lavender an annual, bi-annual or perennial flower? Just give all the details on how to take care of both lavender and rosemary. Do they require sunshine and atering everyday?

How do I maintain Lavender and Rosemary if I have them in 2 separate containers in my bedroom?
They are both dry climate plants. Need sun to flower. More sun, more flowers. They would survive okay indoor next to the sunniest window but not great. To trim, lavenders grow on new woods, so either trim no more than 2 inches and new flowers will grow from there. However, then the plant will eventually become very big and too leggy to be pretty. The other way is to just give it a big haircut at the end of winter and allow new growths and let the old growths die off. In either case, to have a healthy plant you should still bring it out to the full sun after the trim until it flowers before you bring it back indoor. Or else, it may not flower.

Rosemary is easy. Just clip it anyway you like. However, it too needs a lot of hot sun directly to flower. Let it stay inside if where you are is freezing in the winter, and you will have to bring it out to get sun to flower before you bring it back in. Repeat and you will have a, healthy long flowering plant.

Both like their root balls away from cold and on the dry side.

Water thoroughly for both but definitely let it completely dry out. Especially lavenders. Their leaves need to really dry out or else they can have fungus. Give them some fertilisers at a lighter strength 3-4 times a year. They don't need much. Organic fertilizer to avoid buildups.
Reply:Both lavender and rosemary come from desert-like conditions close to the equatorial areas of the Mediterranean. They loooove hot, dry conditions and hours of sun. If they do not get this, they become leggy and/or fail to grow. If you give them all the sun and air they can possibly have out of doors, they are practically no maintenance, except to pinch back the growth and harvest the lavender stems when ready to dry. I grow mine in large clay pots and water thoroughly every day in the hottest part of the Summer.
Reply:They are both perennial herbs.. Easy to grow, just water every other day and give indirect sun.
Reply:Both lavender and rosemary are perennial herbs and are not really suitable for growing indoors. They can cope with the British winter without flinching (although rosemary is a little more tender and is better with some shelter from the wind).

Is there nowhere outside that you can put them? I can see them getting quite etiolated (which means growing very tall because they are looking for light) indoors. I guess they will be ok if you put them in a sunny position, but then you will have to water them a lot, or they will dry out too quickly.

They really require very little care - in a garden you could just leave them to get on with it and maybe trim them when they get a bit out of hand.

Lavender?!?!?

Does anyone know what kind of store i would get 100% lavender oil for me to put in a perfume I'm making? And does anyone know a great smelling base note to put in my perfume that matches well with lavender?

Lavender?!?!?
Lavender and vanilla smell great together.
Reply:Most health stores sell lavendar and as to a base that's up to you and what you think smells good.
Reply:Nail Supply.com-awesome oils. Lavender is my favorite too hence the name.
Reply:100% uncut essential oil. Add a fruit scent as the base because lavender is very hard to blend. Well atleast thats what I think.
Reply:.........hi!
Reply:Try natural food stores and maybe like an herbal store for the lavendar oil. I might use honey or chamomile extract for the base. Those two things smell delicious!! Hope your perfume turns out well!!
